COMAND file types for SD slot and USB?

Has anyone been successful with getting movies to play by loading them on an SD card or USB? I tried to put some MP4 movies (which I figured would be a good format) but I keep getting no playable media or to that affect.

I've searched online and some people say that they've had success while I've also read that it doesn't work....and that the SD slot and USB are strictly for music (MP3's, etc).

Can someone clarify...I really would like to get some sort of movie storage for long trips other than constantly popping in discs.

Thanks...

There are likely legal issues with displaying video content on the dash. Everything I ran across was some kind of hack.

The Comand manual (different from the Owner's Manual) has a list of supported formats for media on SD cards but I don't see any formats/containers officially mentioned for anything other than audio files.

The system will play physical DVD disks, but obviously not on the center screen when the vehicle is moving. (There are work arounds for this.....)

I don't know why there would be "legal issues with displaying video content on the dash" and what that has to do with playing them from SD card or USB....reason why is because I just figured the center screen would go when the vehicle is moved from park the same way it does when you have a DVD disc playing

Yeah I didn't see anything related to video formats in the manual either but while surfing the web I thought I read some people that had success with getting it to work...oh well no biggie

And yes I am familiar and looking into those "workarounds" (DVDinMotion)

I just had another thought....maybe it would be possible to load up movie content on an old smartphone laying around (that has a micro hdmi out) and connect that to the built it composite inputs in the back entertainment area...?

That could work...all you would need is a HDMI-to-composite converter.

Another idea....apparently the output from an older 30-pin iOS device will work:

EDIT: I had an old iPhone 3GS sitting in the drawer and can confirm that the concept of the above link works. One caveat: the 3GS has limited video decoding abilities so I had to use the iPod default settings in Handbrake to make a file that iTunes would transfer to the phone (i.e low resolution). It would appear that the key ability of the older iOS 30-pin devices is the analog video channel that is not part of the spec for the newer all-digital Lightning connector. YMMV.
