Totaled GL450

Good afternoon fellow Mercedes Benz fans and owners. This past Christmas Eve I was in a near head on accident in my 2014 GL450. The roads were icy and an oncoming Ford F-350 lost control and hit me. I was able to react quickly and avoided a head on but took all of the impact on the driver side door. It took about 15 minutes to cut the door off to get me out and both side impact airbags deployed. The State Patrol estimated that the pickup was traveling at 45-50 mph when we collided. I spent 2 days in the hospital with a severe concussion and whiplash. The reason that I am posting this here, is that not only the State Patrol, but also the Paramedics both emphasized that the GL likely saved my life, due to its safety technology. I got my insurance settlement and immediately ran to the dealer to order a new 2017 GLS! I am here to write this because of this amazing vehicle and can wholeheartedly say, drive yours with confidence!

Wow! It's nice to hear that you are ok! I read some stat somewhere that there are 0 fatalities on the x166 on all accidents. So I guess we do have a safe car!!!

Thanks for sharing!

Look at the bright side... You're getting the new beast of a GLS soon!

Thanks MrKoopz!
You are right, when I went in to order the new one, they said, as far as they know, there haven't been any fatalities in this car. The sound it made at impact is something Ill never forget, but I am eagerly awaiting my new baby!

Heard the same thing about 0 fatalities when we were looking at the '16 GL450 that we picked up the same day as your accident. Glad to hear that you didn't become that 1st statistic.

That's probably accurate because there were also none in the X164GL for the entire production run.

Safety was a strong factor when we bought our GL. Although it's not crash tested the ML it's based on did very well, and I felt a lot better about the third row safety vs. smaller three row SUVs. Some seats have not done well in rear collisions, and even Tesla just recalled their seats.

F350s are total beasts, I'm surprised your GL was in such good shape after a hit at that speed. The pillars are in great shape.

Based on your specs that is going to be a sweet GLS.

That was a nasty accident for sure, but the damage doesn't look all that bad and there is no intrusion into the passenger cell that I see from the pictures. What trapped you in the car? Even if the driver door was jammed decidedly shut, why not climb out the passenger side?

As I said, it was quite obviously a very nasty crash...just wondering about the rest, though.

Thank God you are safe. Those F350s are big and powerful, and combine that with 40-50mph can be fatal.

Safety was also one of the main reasons we bought the GL.

Agree with jumping out of the car from Passenger Side......I would do it if I get into this kind of accident, unless I was blacked out.

My wife had a fender bender while coming out of the parking lot (Womans always at fault by default) the guy along with his wife in the car never came out of until the Fire\Ambulance\Cop came and they went to the hospital in Ambulance didn't make sense to me as my wife came in their way and my car was damaged at Bumper\Fender\Headlight compare to their only headlight\slight bumper damage and then soon I figured out when my Insurance company called and said they sued us for the medical injuries....

You've got a closed head injury and neck injury, there's no immediate need to expose yourself to any other idiots losing control on the ice, and it's freezing cold outside the vehicle. Where's the urgency to climb out the passenger side?

If he had emergency notification services on the vehicle, the operator may have even advised him to stay put until help arrived.

I don't know about you supermen, but I've typically not made my best decisions with a concussion either.

I havent seen in my life anyone sitting and getting a warm air with their Air Bags popped open in a car (Fender-Bender I agree) a totaled car? well there are always people on both the sides of the aisle....Can't make a person to agree on which he plans on to dis-agree.

Thanks

Its a little hard to see with those pictures, but the white stuff on the side of the drivers seat is the interior padding. The pillar between the front and rear door pushed in and is resting against the side of the drivers seat, it split the seam in the leather. The driver door smashed in more than the rear door, hitting my hip and ribs. Our second home is at a large ski town, and the snow on the side of the road which i was pushed into was luckily around 5 feet deep, it kept the car from rolling, but compacted like cement, so there was no way to open the passenger doors, which is why they cut the driver door off. If there was anything that was a little worrisome, it is that the impact caused the transmission to jam in drive, so as i came to a rest on my side in the snow, you couldnt get the transmission out drive and because the battery is located in the cabin under the passenger seat, it was tough to get the car turned off! Unfortunately i was unconscious, and when i came to, it was feared that i had a broken hip and or back, but I couldnt have gotten out of the car anyway. A paremedic crawled in when the got the door off and got me onto a backboard to slide me out of the car. I was lucky, and besides the concussion, i had nasty whiplash and severe soft tissue injuries from the door smashing into me.👍 some said it was an unlucky Christmas for me, but I feel like it was just the opposit, extremely lucky!😉

on GLC300 #2, a 2022 CPO purchased b/c I really dislike the X254's UI (GL350 before those)
Meh, that'll buff right out.

(Glad you're okay, thanks for the post and enjoy the new GLS.)

I was sitting next to an F-350 at a red light yesterday, the hood was about at the level of my head. I'm pretty sure it was stock, and it really does dwarf a GL. I'm still blown away that it hit you at that speed without injuring you and the vehicle more significantly. Makes me feel good about making the decision to buy this for my family, so thanks again for sharing.

Thank God you made it through that. Not many folks can get hit offset on a driver door by a full size pickup and live to tell the tale.
