Running boards - question

The tiny rubber or plastic grips on the top of the running boards are falling off. Do we get replacements? What are they called?

Thanks much!

I'm interested in the answer as well. My running boards have severe spotting and I'd like to pry off the rubber grips to refinish the boards. Any change you could post some photos so I can see what they look like? Thanks. Here's a link to the running board spot photos.

Have you tried the Bar Keepers Friend (BFK) cleaner? Try a corner spot, should work wonders.

But where do I find those rubber grips ?

Thanks. I'm reluctant to use any abrasive, be it BKF or Bon Ami, until I know whether or not I can replace the grips. If I can pop them out and then back in, I can run the risk of trying to remove the spots. If I fail, then I can refinish. I am pretty sure the aluminum is anodized. If the anodization is removed, it can't be left untreated, as it will very quickly start to darken. You would be doing me a great favor if you could post a photo of the underside of a grip so I can see if I can pop them out.

I lost one today at a carwash!

Here's the second one, hasn't popped out yet. I think they have to be raised by the 2 edges and then turned 45 deg.

Thanks. Before I get too ambitious, I think I will stop by the dealer to see if I can figure out what they are called and if they can be ordered. With luck I can do this Monday afternoon and report....

Thanks as well. Funny how things work out. There are 80 of these clips so ttl would be about $350.00 to replace them all. I can get new running boards (not oem) for $225.00. Trouble is I have the light kit which seems to molded into the running boar itself. I'm soooo confused...

Thanks. I have '14 ML. My guess is the clips are interchangeable, but not the steps themselves.

Unfortunately, it looks like the step plate itself will have to be removed, based on the fact that there are "locks" installed on the underside to hold the step plate clips. Bummer...

You don't need a whole new running board. You'll need the metal step plate, 3 mounting rubber grips and their locking disc clips.

The metal running board plate only has 3 removable rubber grips holding the metal plate to the plastic running board housing: one on the front, one in the middle and one on the rear. The mounting rubber grips have a plastic post that goes through the slot shaped opening with the hole in the middle, as the picture posted earlier shows. They are held in by a small metal disc which clips onto the plastic post attached to these 3 mounting rubber grips.

All of the other rubber grips are not replaceable....they are linked together by a continuous rubber ribbon strip underneath the step plate.

The metal plate on my running board actually popped off after some road debris hit the front end of the running board, and I had to replace it. Watched a youtube video on how to remove the running board, then figured out how to put the the new metal plate and clips on. Took less than 15 minutes.

Hi I need to replace the Step plate on my x166.
Can I do this without removing the step board?
Thanks
