Unfortunately, 19” is as small as I can go due to AMG package. So, I’m looking up to the 20” as 19”s have no tyre flexibility. I’m landing on 10.5 rims with 275/55R20’s as my best compromise. However, I’m guessing there’s going to be rubbing on full lock. So I’m going to have a go at installing the ride height sensors to get it up a few millimeters. But, I’m hoping there won’t be any rub without having to do this. Any thoughts?

Hi Tom, mine is the 2015 350 with all the fruit before they went GLS in Australia. It’s got the 21”s 295/40SR21 stock with the AMG brakes. I’ve been advised an aftermarket rim - 20” with 275/50/R20’s. However, I really want to go 275/55/R20’s. I’ve scanned long and hard through the forums and I deduct that the chances are there that they will rub, but only on full lock. If that’s the case, I’ll source some of those ride height adjustable arms and lift it a bit. I’m assuming that will stop any rub. But, I’m still gambling it seems. The drama I have is I’m ‘regional’ which means ‘remote’ to most people. So, I’m ordering from 5000km away with no return warranty if I order the 55’s instead of the 50’s. I’m fishing for any reassurance on here from anyone that has tried this set-up. Or, can help me work out the measurements via pics.

P31 equipment for non-US markets GL line is the same specs as US GL550 (with standard AMG body kit virtually identical to GL63). However, the front Calipers and Rotors are not the same as GL63AMG, the AMG front rotors are 390mm with huge Brembo "AMG" Calipers.

i used them in n my X164 GL350. After about 10K miles, it developed humming noise that I thought was the wheel bearing but ended up the tires were cupping. Best tires I’ve used on both my X164 & X166 are the pirelli scorpios at 275/55R20.

Geolandar AT may be too aggressive for sand as they will just dig in instead of floating over. I would go with highway tread.

I currently have Michelin Defender LTX 285/50/20 - they do very well in the sand, I take the GL regularly to Cure beach here in NC. Most of the time I don't even need to air down.

You can drive over sand easily with aggressive tread but you have to air down your tires quite a bit.

When I was running those I believe I went slightly down from the stock recommended PSI. Google “tire pressure chalk test”. That’s the only way I know of to determine the correct tire pressure with tire sizes and load ratings outside of factory. I was lazy and never did it.

2003 E320 4matic wagon
2014 GL550 running michelin zr 295/55/21 with 44psi rear & 39psi front. Initial mount should be done with road force balance to within 10lb instead of the standard 30lb. Rotate and balance every 3.5k miles with synthetic mobil1 oil change. On my 6th set of tires having tried continental, bridgestone, Michelin. After learning to rotate every 3.5k miles, getting decent mileage out of a set and that’s with towing 2 different trailers. Cheers,

What is the ground clearance on this setup with the suspension maxed?
I am looking at the possibility of picking up a GL(something) for Colorado adventures, including some to dispersed camping on some kind of nasty forest roads. I need at least 8" of clearance.
TIA!

This is a copy and paste from the below road test of the 2006 to 2012 X164 with the off road package. I have recently sold my 2008 model after owning it for 6 years and although I never used it off road it was a fabulous vehicle. I have replaced it with a 2016 GL63 which only has 2 height settings compared to the earlier vehicle having 3 height settings, also with diff locks etc if you need them.

At its highest, the GL’s fording depth is 600mm and ground clearance 307mm. It has 33deg and 27deg approach and departure angles respectively, and will tip over only after listing 35deg. There’s a full-length skid plate underneath, lockable differentials, a hill descent system and a low-range set of gears. In short, it’s as equipped as any big SUV for off-roading.

The only issue is MB put some sensitive electronics under the floorboard/seats and suffer from water intrusion damage even when not fording 600mm. Besides the whole water intrusion issues, it's a fantastic platform that I drove for over 10 years and almost 300k miles. Mine didn't have the ORP but would have been cool to have.

Thanks for this. I have another thread going for some offroad questions, and the suggestion is to find the offroad package in the x166... a unicorn. I don't have any rivers to cross in my journeys, and I really like the Diesel option.

It looks like the standard X166 platform raises to provide 11.2 inches ground clearance, which should meet my needs. I guess I could find someone to fab some skid plates. Lots of rocks where I go.

That's great to hear. I hope to find one that will last me a while!

For whatever it is worth, I ran across way more X166's with the ORP when I was shopping for a GL than I did the X164.
