2015 GL350
2015 GL350 Repairs @ 46,000

Just did a DIY replacement of Engine Air Filters and Fuel Filter. With the amount of disassembly required, no wonder dealerships charge so much. CEL for P226F soon followed by the AdBlue count down had me at the dealer. NOx sensor and Ad Blue Preheater issues were the cause but while under the car a small leak in a transfer case seal was discovered. Thankfully, all under warranty by 4K miles. That leads me to a question for those that have experienced the DIY maintenance on the X166 diesels and typical repairs I could expect to experience as well. I drive roughly 13-15K miles per year. Some of that is pulling a 6K lb. boat - effortlessly I might add - and much of the day-to-day is freeway speeds in the metro Phoenix area. I've read some on OM642 issues compounded by EPA requirements but much of the problems seem to be associated with cold weather, short trips, and not recent x166 application. Any experience and advice on what other areas that are likely to fail post warranty would be much appreciated.

5/16 - Update - After work was completed, testing showed SCR Catalytic Converter damage from all the AdBlue being dumped into the system (smoke and AdBlue pungent odor was pouring out of the exhaust as I first drove into the dealer for my appointment). Parts located on the East Coast so it'll be another week for shipping and repairs - uhg. But under warranty. Hope they got all that could be damaged by the raw caustic AdBlue. Opinions? Comments?

6/12 - Update - FYI, the cost of repairs was a few cents over $10,444.00. Glad none of it was out of my pocket.

As noted in many previous topics, buy the extended warranty.
My 14 GL 350 was operating perfectly until 44,000 miles,(close to ending the 4 year window) so I purchased the extended warranty after reading the forums. 1000 miles later, engine light came on and Whole Urea delivery tank and system (pre heater, etc) was dealer replaced...phew, they didn’t quote a price bit I’m sure it was high.
I purchased the 3 yr/75,000 extension, as I only travel ~10,000 miles/year.

Thanks CaptivaBenz. Exactly the kind of feedback I’m looking for. Considering the extension. Sounds like your experience is similar but my DEF system puked while under warranty. Have you had other issues? I’m trying to get a sense for the risk vs reward as this awesome vehicle ages.

I also recommend the ELW. I purchased the 5/75 ELW (adds 1 year and 25k miles to original factory warranty). Call Jeff Jackson at Talfel Motors in Louisville, KY. He, by far, offers the best price on any ELW.
BTW, I miss my GL350 from a luxury and long road tripper perspective. Drove her almost 60k miles in 3 years/3 months.

Thanks another car. Did you have any issues during that last 10K on the extended warranty coverage? What were they? Appreciate any additional info.

Never had any issue with my GL350 (model year 2015). Granted that I put 60,000 miles on it in a little over 3 years, most were highway miles which the diesel burners like. Drove her from OH to So Cal to N. Carolina two weeks after picking her up. But never had any issues at all. Had it serviced every 10k miles at a MB dealer in various locales depending on where we were at the time.
My current ride is X5 35d and also a diesel burner. Have retired and moved to S. Carolina so this one will not get quite as many highway miles but it's a 36 month lease so I'm not too concerned about the frequency of locally driven miles.
My opinion is that properly maintained your GL 350 should give you 100,000 ++ miles of good service. Some, not all, of the naysayers here (on the forum) don't even own diesels.

Mine has almost 50,000 miles now and, except for the Urea Warranty Repair, has been an excellent transport vehicle. No other repairs necessary except for rear brakes replacement.
Solid, strong, great handling car around town and smoothe/steady for long trips.
This is my second Gl, first GL 320 I traded in at 75,000 miles and also was excellent.
