Cylinder #5 Misfire SOLVED

I also am joining this group. 68K, getting intermittent CEL and "Cylinder 5 misfire" code.
Question for those that have had this issue. Covid has been rough on my finances and this year has been a doozy. I don't have the resources/money to trade in my vehicle or to fix this massive issue due to, well, life.
How long can you safely drive in this, as in the engine won't implode? Days? Months? Years? This wasn't on my 2020 bingo card.

This also happens to the 5.5L V8 M157 engine (GL63/ML63/CLS63/E63/S63/etc). There have been about 3-4 just at my local dealership and the cost is around $15,000 out of pocket or 100% covered under factory warranty or CPO.
It's also Cylinder #5 misfire, the issue I'm told is the factory press didn't push in the sleeve correctly and causes a leak. Not all M157 are affected, but the ones that used that press were. At least what I'm told.
Interesting this also occurred on a M278 non-hand built engine.
Glad you got this fixed and enjoy your "brand new" engine!
How much did the extra valve stems cost you for the other side? Looks like normal carbon build-up so as the other poster mentioned, possibly re-gained hp/torque and fuel economy. Hopefully the car now lasts you 300,000 miles!!
Watch your transmission - if it starts clunking or hard shifting, a few also got that and the torque converter replaced under warranty - which is another $10-$15k repair at least on the AMG.
On the used market, your car is the one to own, similar to a M156 engine that already head the head bolt issue resolved!

Thanks for the info as this is incredibly helpful. I was looking at buying a 2015 GL63 AMG that was throwing a cylinder 5 misfire code and decided to move on as it wasn't clear if it was a simple fix or as extensive as some are experiencing here. I am looking to buy at 2015 or 2016 GL63 that doesn't have this issue if any of you know somebody selling. Thanks!

This is going to be interesting. Having them pull the head now. I have been disusing the issue with the shop owner. We both have been referencing this Forum Thread. Thought I would post this for anyone else and the NC area that might have the same issue.

2 weeks ago I was purchasing a 2014 GL63 with 64k on it. After searching for almost a year to find the right color, right price, B&O sound, tow package, records, etc, I found one a few hours away. As the dealer was pulling it around to put the temp tag on it while I signed the paperwork, the CEL came on. They agreed to hold the deal and either put me up for the night and scan it in the morning or let me drive it home and have the dealer here look it over. If it was minor, they'd take care of it. If it was something else, they'd take it back. I opted to take it home, sleep in my own bed, and take it to the local MB dealer the following morning.
Dealer scan revealed a misfire in the #5 cylinder. Electronic compression test is NLA on AMG vehicles (at the dealer, anyway). Cylinder leak down test showed 65% leakage at #5. Selling dealer took it back and I assume will send it to auction.

Buy it from them at wholesale and then buy a factory Mercedes Benz ELW if you are still able to or aftermarket warranty.
Have the warranty fix the engine and you can even replace all the heads if you want or port/polish it while it's apart.

I have a 2015 GL63 that is throwing the #5 cylinder codes. When you start it the idle is just barely off and it runs pretty good. After driving for 10 min it starts running very rough and hardly idles. I haven’t seen others with these type of symptoms.

oddly enough, it turns off after driving in snow and will stay off for 3-4 weeks. Then turns back on when it warms up randomly. It’s done this 2-3 times now when going skiing where it will turn off.

Tune
I read somewhere that a special tune can be had to somewhat remedy the issue. Interestingly enough about 3 months ago I received a letter from Mercedes telling me to bring in my e550 coupe for a complimentary updated tune. I didn’t ask what was it for, but I’m wondering now. Kinda odd for a dealership to update a tune 8 years after the engine was first released.

So my 2015 GL63 that I bought in December is still at Mercedes of Birmingham. I purchased it from a dealer in Texas and the check engine light came on during my first drive after taking delivery. It also began having very rough idle and lack of power. I immediately ran the codes and it was #5 misfire. After lots of communication with the dealership it went to Mercedes of Birmingham and they found #5 cylinder was leaking. MB ended up pulling the motor, having the head worked, and fixed the bad valve. While waiting for the courtesy shuttle to come get me on Friday, they called and said the GL63 has the rough idle and loss of power again. The dealership I purchased it from has stepped up and payed the 9k bill so far. I just got a call this afternoon that the motor is coming back out. Ughhhhhhh. This has been a nightmare. I bought it the week before Christmas and still haven’t driven it except for the initial drive. It was my wife’s Xmas present. I am wondering what else could be wrong. I initially figured it was an injector but I was told the tech rules that out.

Ouch.
1) no loaner?
2) have them check for oil in the engine harness.
3) might as also have them check any rubber hoses that might need replacing and engine mounts while everything is out.

1) Because this was an issue with the selling dealer, I didn’t get a loaner at the time. Now that this is issues the MB didn’t find, they are giving us a loaner for the remainder of the process.
2) They have looked for oil. None was found. When I first got the car and the light came on, that was the first thing I looked for as well.
3) Absolutely. I paid to have extra services done to get everything perfect. Spark plugs, filters, any hoses or other items that looked questionable. Over all everything looked great. It only has 48k miles.
thank you for your feedback!!! I am new to MB. Been big into Audi in the past. My wife has been driving my Modded Audi S7 and it is scaring me to death. Lol.

Apologies - I meant to say engine wiring harness.

Common issue for M157/M278 and other MB engines.

Engine wiring harness. There have been multiple issues with oil seeping into the wire harness which causes all kinds of electrical craziness. #5 cylinder is the first one on the driver side so it normally gets the oil first and causes issues with the coil firing.

Nice - if once you get this major service done, it should hopefully be smooth sailing from here.
