2014 GL 450 ? ? ? ?

Tomorrow, I'm going to look at a 2014 GL 450 with a 4.7L V8 and 69,000 miles. Anything special I should be looking for or wary of?

Maintenance records, and specifically verification of routine maintenance throughout its prior ownership.

Bought my '14 GL450 CPO with 43k in Aug '17. Now has 68K.
Stuff to watch for:
Motor mounts were bad on delivery. Test drive had a little shudder. Salesman said bring it in if it bothered me. It did. New mounts at 46k

360 back up camera was crap at night, specifically the actual camera in the tailgate. Thanks to this forum, I learned there was a software update. Dealer found it and did the update. Big, big improvement at 46k.

Sirius would freeze up. Dealer found and did a Comand update. No more freezing at 46k.

Driver's side air intake tube had a hole in it and was at replaced at 50k.

If you have the rear side windows that open out, check them. My pass side became unglued from the hinge at 47k.

Noticed on the VMI at time of purchase that the rear main seal had been replaced. Insisted they put the car on a lift so I could check before purchase. They did and all dry. No oil leaks.

Otherwise car has been rock solid. Like the line from the original "Road Warrior"....."Last of the V8 Interceptors".

Don't rely solely on carfax accident/damage report. Last week I got into a 2013 GL450 from BMW of Bakersfield. Sales person graded the car 9/10 with clean carfax that also showed religious maintenance. Dealer also sorted everything. A few days later I detailed the car only to uncover that the rear quarter panel that has been repainted w/ good amount of bondo. Front bumper has also been repainted which I don't mind but the quarter panel is major damage (more than $500). This is something a dealer such as BMW should have red flagged. I now have to take them to court to resolve. A quarter panel repaint definitely doesn't qualify for 9/10 grade. Sad thing is it's a poor job. probably 6/10 at best.

Inspect all body gaps and rubber moldings for sign of overspray.

Also listen to car carefully at idle and when switching from neutral to gear. My car has fairly new tires in the front and I have a very slight grinding vibration felt in the steering wheel and floor board of drivers.

Good Luck

A gaggle of MB's

You bought the GL - in person - at the BMW dealer with 87K because of the "sharp price" - sorry it was your responsibility to go over the GL Before you signed the papers .. what is done is done.. if that panel bothers you get it fixed..

Did the car come with an inspection report from the dealership? If not, you are probably SOL. Always get a professional inspection done before buying a car.

Hey guys, don't put to much faith in CARFAX. I have a running problem with them. I had a clean CARFAX when I purchased the car and later an accident showed up ie frame damage. Have spent numerous emails with them and they told me it was reported three month late and that it really wasn't frame damage only minor incident. They did change the frame damage to incident on the next CARFAX report. But it is still on my record and it never happened.

I have checked with the Mercedes Dealer who sold me the car ie a CPO and it never happened. Checked with the Federal data base and had my insurance company run a VIN accident check and neither showed accident or minor incident. I also paid for some of the other services that you can get to check your cars history and its all clean.

You can not get the CARFAX on the chat line and they are unresponsive on emails. I asked them to show me where they got the report and they said it was proprietary information.

Also had one dealer to tell me, they have people trade cars in after it was involved in an accident and had it fix pronto and then went immediately trades it in. When the dealer checked the CARFAX it was clean only to show up later.

Im still working this issue and unhappy.

Bottom line, and I got this from a CARFAX representative, he said, "CARFAX tells you not to make the decision totally on a CARFAX report. Im still upset and trying to figure out what to do since their report lessen the value of my car.
