M278 P013E Rich to Lean Code

P013E: O2 Sensor Delayed Response - Rich to Lean (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

2013 GL450 w/ 107k
Having this code throw a CEL intermittently then go away on it's own. Haven't found much on others with the same code. Has anyone had this and resolved the issue? One would think it's just an oxygen sensor but just want to be sure it's not a result of another upstream issue.

My indy told me last time in shop he Xentry showed Cylinder 7 injector was slightly off balance but I haven't had any codes (I did have an injector quantity code exceeded maximum limit but it went away on it's own after some Techron). When I told him injector code went away he said don't worry about replacing injector.

Any thoughts here?

this just popped up for me also, after not driving a car for about a week given the Covid situation. Mine is also a 2013 GL450, with 74K miles on it. The guy at autozone said it may be just a loose connector.

Any thoughts about this requiring a replacement or something else?

Thanks.

Mine did this a few time but it always went away. My bank 1 STFT is -10% so wondering if there's an issue with the oxygen sensor. Spark plugs @ 55k but don't think that'd have as big as of an effect.

I've seen other users replace their oxygen sensors and have noticeable results (not due to this code but in general). I'm thinking an oxygen sensor may be the culprit, but that's a hunch.

Mine just popped up again today. I'm having an indy do a spark plug change and will see if they can decipher while in there.

Indy thinks Cylinder 7 injector is the culprit. It's slightly off balance from the SDS test and would explain the rich to lean code and intermittent rough idle. I've heard of all the injectors going bad on early M278's, but has anyone had only one go bad? I hear piezo injector's pass fuel through so quickly fuel additive/injector cleaning may be snake oil for this application. Are there any ways to clean piezo's without removals or is the injector simply on it's way out?

I see others have replaced a single injector when chasing the shot cylinder block but the indy said none of their tests led them to believe anything was wrong with the valves/compression/etc.

Found a fix for this?

Not yet I’ve been putting it off and the CEL is pretty rare. Still a little right at idle sometimes due to injector (we think). Yours doing the same thing?

Delayed response is usually a sensor element going bad. O2 sensors degrade with age. Replace the pair, as once you have a new, good working one on one side, the other will be slow to respond by comparison and you will get the same code on the other side.

And we replaced HUNDREDS of single injectors. The Piezo injectors are fairly unreliable, but it's due to how incredibly sensitive the car is to fine actuation of them. Any issue in the timing or performance of the injector and you get misfires and odd issues. We thought nothing of having an engine come in with a misfire code on one cylinder, we would pull the plug and verify it's condition, then swap out the injector if it still happened. I loved doing the job, as it payed quite well and was very easy once you knew what to do.
