Turbo coolant reservoir cracked

Turbo coolant reservoir cracked
My 2016 GL450 threw a CEL. Upon checking the code, all it came back with was excessive air flow on air intake. I popped open the hood and I could hear a louder than normal hissing noise. After removing the air ducts for the coolers, I noticed the reservoir for the turbos has a huge crack. I added a red arrow in case the crack is not obvious. I ordered the part and I expect to receive it Monday. Has anyone run into this issue before?

Nope. I changed the oil on it recently. I would have absolutely no reason to lean on the reservoir hard enough to crack it like that. The dude at the parts counter was nonchalant about it and said they sometimes crack from the turbo pressure. I think I had it hammer down once up to 100 mph. That’s about as hard as it gets.

There is no pressure in turbo cooling line other than from coolant heat expansion. Replace reservoir cap as well, valve in it might be stuck.

It looks like the reservoir was leaned on, or the cap was overtorqued and broke the reservoir.

Wow....that is one giant crack. I’ll have to check mine. I’ve been smelling coolant in the garage with no signs of leakage for months (only driven a couple times a week). I was not aware that was not pressurized.
Curious code, let us know if that fixes your issue!

I have the same on my 2017 GLS450. The mechanic just replaced the (cracked) radiator 2 months ago. Got a low coolant warning and took it over there to top off (I assumed it was just some burping). Noticed that crack in the reservoir as I was poking around under the hood. The curious thing is it doesn't seem to be leaking at all.
Is the install easy? Remove large MB engine cover, disconnect 2 coolant lines and swap reservoir?

I’ll want to replace the reservoir but am wondering if anyone found root cause other than poor design. Thanks in advance.

What is the update on this?
I have attached a diagram of the parts the actual reservoir just popped out of the housing that it's supposed to sit in.
I have attached a diagram of the parts:
You can see part number 19 is the actual tank and it sits in the housing which is number 20

that large crack looks acute - hit or leaned on or heavy weight atop it perhaps? Not seen one crack like that - can the turbo side be over-pressurized in some scenario? Thermostat stuck leading to an over-pressurized tank? Odd.
if this one cracked, also check main coolant tank, as it also likely has small cracks emitting that subtle sweet coolant fragrance. A UV light placed behind coolant tank illuminates small cracks quite nicely.
lastly, change orings on both coolant caps. I purchased new reservoir & reused old cap & then noticed white residue below cap. Ugh. I was lazy and just purchased a new cap 210501061564 (depending upon where bought coolant tank may come with new cap+tank which is best scenario). I will try to find part number for orings only for both caps.
these are simple preventative steps that will hopefully keep these high heat engines going longer.
I just replaced all coolant hoses + radiators (one for turbo, one for engine) on mine, 2014 gl550, 203k miles, and what a difference on the temp side.

What does Item 20 actually do? Is it just a bracket to hold the fluid-filled reservoir Item 19? If Item 20 cracks does it really even matter? Reading through the comments above, and looking at the pictures, I'm not sure.
