Why do these GL's keep eating transmissions?

In the market for a GL. Found one that was meticulously maintained at the dealer. I am talking stacks and stacks of paperwork. Was browsing Carfax and noticed that at 35K miles the transmission was replaced, and then at 50K miles, replaced again.

This is a 2014 GL350, was there a recall on certain years for the transmission?

First I've heard of a systemic problem. Sounds like a bad original unit and a bad repair.

This place is a joke.
You're buying a diesel yet you're worried about transmissions? That's the least of your future repair liabilities.

Regarding the diesel,

I was just going to do that ECU hack where it gets rid of all those pesky diesel issues. Isn't that what everybody on this forum suggests?

Depends on where you live.

Here in the USA there was a large diesel emissions settlement between the government and Mercedes with a related civil class action lawsuit settlement. The upshot is the GL diesels are receiving numerous new parts in the exhaust system, a new extended warranty, and cash. To receive the settlements the system must be stock, so it makes sense to wait and do the ECU mods in four years after the new warranty expires. The new warranty also covers a bunch of stuff in the engine that are not part of the emissions modifications.

Also, the hack is not quite as easy as reprogramming the ECU but it's still straightforward. You'll also want to remove the DPFs cause if they are not regenerating, they are clogging. Removing them is also technically illegal in the USA, but lots of folks with lots of brands have done it. (Not all successfully, however. )

Do you know if in Canada they also get this treatment or no? Didn't realize you had to remove the exhaust.

I heard the OM642 is a great engine as long as you get rid of the emission parts. The GL450/GL550 I rather not get because if in 4-5 years I need to replace the turbos I heard its an engine out procedure.

Too many german broads
These do not eat through transmissions. Find another one - one that has been properly serviced, including on time transmission service.

GL350
I have a 2014 GL350, which I love and is my main car.

That being said, you have to be crazy to buy one in 2021. This is far from a trouble-free platform, even if you do a DEF-delete.

For what’s it worth, my 14 GL 350 is at 81,000 miles, had the DEF modifications at the dealer 7 months ago, had routine Auto Transmission flush/exchange at 75,000 miles.
no problems at all, a solid and comfortable SUV.
No check received from MB, hopefully in my lifetime…
