Question 2015 GL 550 DELIVERY OTW!

Hello MBworld,

I recently pulled a trigger and saw this fresh 2015 GL 550 with OEM 21" black AMG Wheels. What caught my attention the most is the low mileage it has. It only has 37,000 miles on it and clean carfax, regular maintenance, and stayed in California for the entirety of its life(so I'm assuming there will be no rust concerns). I still haven't seen the car and it will be delivered in 2 days.

I want to ask because it is scaring me about horror stories I've been hearing for the past week about concerns with air suspensions, Misfires and etc. I just want to ask how reliable is this? I barely hear a success story stating 100k+ miles and happy customer. I used to own a 2003 CL55 AMG and all the reviews are bad but that car is a beast I drove it from 70k miles to 120k miles with no problem except for the Hydraulic pump around 110k. I wonder if that's a case with 2015 GL 550 X166 too? the nature of seeing all the bad but not the good?

How reliable is 2015 GL 550 with low miles of 37,000 nowadays?
Does anyone have a success story reaching beyond 100k and up with little to no issues?
I also want to know what 3rd party extended warranty is the best to deal with and have the best coverage?
Is there any way to get an extended warranty from the dealership or close to what the dealership has to offer?

The car will arrive in 2 days at my house but I can deny it if it didn't pass my inspection, or upon acceptance, I have 7 days to return the vehicle free of charge. Let me know guys what you think? Thank you so much!

Welcome! Please post a photo of the GL when it arrives.

Try posting the questions in the X166 which is the platform for your vehicle. The body/chassis/steering/electrics are reliable on that platform. The rest depends on how it was treated and maintained, as with any vehicle.

Congratulations on your new ride! I help tons of forum members with their warranties. The best two third party companies are Freedom Warranty and Fidelity, I would not recommend any others. They are both comparable as far as coverage and claims acceptance, but Freedom does offer lower prices. For a 5 year / up to 100k mile manufactures extension by Freedom Warranty, $4,595, covered for $275 an hour, repairs accepted by all Mercedes Benz dealers in North America, only $100 deductible, 0% financing is available. Contact me at (602) 909-9216 or tgibson@highline-autos.com with any questions or if you'd like to see an example contract.

I would avoid purchasing a warranty from a dealerr, dealers put thousands on top of the cost of the warranty, better to just go straight to the source.

100k miles with zero issues - not possible. At the least, you will need new turbo coolant lines and probably a few others since they are, seemingly, made from non-heat resistant plastic. If you have and use distronic, your rear brakes will need to be changed between 10k and 20k miles. If not, brake pads may last 40 to 50k miles. Odds are you will have to replace an ebrake actuator since they are known to seize. Maybe an air shock or two but they do seem more reliable than those on the 164. You may also need to replace the engine mounts depending on your driving style before 100k. Mine needed replacement around 100k miles and I drive sedately.

I'm not saying to or not to buy a warranty from the poster above but you may want to look into an aftermarket warranty if costs are an issue. There are some decent ones out there. Make sure to read reviews and their overall BBB rating. The last aftermarket one I had, Chrysler Automotive Service Contracts, were great and in my opinion better than CPO but they no longer write MB's. Again, do your research.

If they let you keep it for the day you could bring it in to Mercedes’ for a dynamic compression and dynamic balance test. Otherwise you are in the hook for typical issues that may or may not happen. Just like any other car. If you bought a warranty you should be less concerned…. If you are asking to reach 200k trouble free. Some luck will be needed. They only think you have control is maintenance and engine and transmission oil changes to prolong its life. Motor mounts will need to be changed sooner than you think so prep for that.

With the low mileage you should be eligible for great third party warranty coverage, which you should definitely get...especially if you plan to rack up many miles on this.

My car arrived and everything is perfect and the GL 550 is huge and I fell in love with it. I went to the dealership the next day service it and inspect. They didn’t find anything concerning and been told everything is working perfectly. To my surprised, they told me the vehicle was being service there the entirety of it’s life regularly. What a small world. They offered me an extended warranty and I wanted the max duration. They gave me a qoute of 5 yrs/60,000 for $8k and 4yrs/48,000 for $7400. It is a little bit too much for me either one so I am just holding for the qoute for now to shop around for extended warranty. I still have the carvana’s limited warranty for 100 days.

do you guys think I should take it or there are out here cheaper? and I know nothing better than a warranty from the dealership. But is there a 3rd party that can cover $250 labor hours that easy to talk to? Let me know what you think guys! Thank you!

I took it to the dealership the next day. God thanks they said the car was perfect and they told me the previous owner before me used to take it there at the same dealership regularly. Carvana allows 7 day return policy but I don’t think I will return it. The dealership gave me an extended warranty quote but a little bit too much for me so I’m still shopping around for a good 3rd party warranty while still on carvana’s 100 day warranty

At the low mileage, I wouldn't expect anything wrong but do not rely on a dealer to guide you. They will not guide you it comes to preventing problems. Also, avoid the dealer for 3rd party warranty. You can get it anywhere, just shop around. Check with AutoPom.

Good job. Glad you took that initiative to do that. Gives you peace of mind. So was the service regular intervals? You will will have the trans service at around 75k so maybe a few years. I know it’s a lot of questions when you are in happy state of mind. Do you know if they did the dynamic compression test with the xentry scanner? Let us know how they handled the multi point inspection.
