Unhappy I'm scared and lost! My GL63 (X166) is stranded.

Hello, X166 community!

I have a 2015 GL63 with 59k miles. Purchased from MB of Manhattan and meticulously maintained, but with a series of issues over the years. However, with subzero temperatures in Chicagoland lately, it has started acting a little funny. A week and a half ago, I had to have a rim repaired. Unfortunately, this has been a too frequent thing. Upon leaving the highly-reputable tire shop with my repaired wheel, I noticed the vehicle would vibrate violently at 70 mph and above. I took it back and they rebalanced the wheel. It was very difficult to notice any issues with it thereafter. I mention this to simply be thorough and to make sure that I did not miss anything on this front.

Yesterday, with -11F weather here in Illinois, the car started up and said low coolant. The message quickly disappeared and did not come on for the rest of the day. Honestly, I did not check the coolant and assumed the warning was just a bug from it being so cold. I have never had to top off the coolant in a Mercedes.

Later in the evening, I was traveling to take my dad and his partner to a family Christmas gathering. Drove 15 miles without issue. Parked and started getting them into the car. Upon starting the vehicle, the CEL came on. After about 30 seconds, the car started shaking pretty violently with the CEL beginning to flash. I started to smell a burning or sulfur smell in the cabin and quickly shut the vehicle off. Unfortunately, being in front of a fire hydrant, I did have to move the vehicle into a parking lot around the corner. It remains there because this happened the day before Christmas Eve! Anyway, the smell reminded me that earlier in the morning, I felt that the smell of gasoline was a little overwhelming, but I attributed that to the cold just like the one-time coolant warning. It didn't happen the rest of the day.

Last night, I did check for codes and got 9 of them: P0300, P0348, P0393, P0355, P0352, P0353, P0305, P0302, P0308. At this point, I am also dreading everything since my warranty expired at the end of November...whilst she was at Fletcher Jones where I had expressed concern about a slight rough idle (unable to replicate)...how convenient?

Coolant leak is mostly likely the turbo lines. They frequently fail. It's slow at first and what you'll notice is that the car will give you a low coolant warning when cool (first start of the day) and but won't give you another one until the next cool start. The reason for this is because the coolant level in the expansion tank goes up when the vehicle is warm. So you're just at the cusp of it triggering that warning. It's an easy enough fix but still a pain in the rear. I've been procrastinating and topping mine off once a week.

On the rest of the stuff, kind of tough to say. I'd want to see what codes are active. You've got a few codes for coil circuits which is causing your misfiring but there's also a cam code there which seems unrelated. My fear here would be oil intrusion into the harness causing these issues but you'd really need more diagnostics.

Appreciate the feedback.

I ended up buying a more sophisticated code reader that should be delivered next week. I cannot get the vehicle towed out of a parking lot at my father's building in Chicago. AAA told me it was "non-priority" and "due to the weather" they would not tow it even at my expense. They told me to call them back tomorrow.
I already had oil in the engine wiring harness before. I started a pretty well-known thread about it years past. Thank god covered under warranty.

I guess it was low. Unfortunately, the battery is completely dead too now.

I have a 15 GL550, radiator was leaking and replaced at 68K miles, and a 15 ML63 boughtt 90k miles with a tiny leak from the radiator and replaced. These radiators suck.

As for the other errors, I'm not going to look up all the codes, but just start going through them 1 by 1. I had a failed coil in my ML63, so I replaced them all and the spark plugs. It had a few different types of coils on it. Previous owner stated coils were replaced, so either they did a few, or told him they did it and ripped him off. A bad coil will show a misfire on that cylinder and run horribly with reduced power.

Check your 15amp fuses in the engine compartment - black box passenger side. F213,214 and 215.

What is the best scanner tool for GL450? Can’t get star but wondering if anyone could recommend a tool that will calibrate / TS issues on the car.

I'm very happy with my Launch X-431 V, it has done everything I needed to do and coded some sustom settings on multiple makes and models. Worth the price, will pay for itself.

why is your coolant orangey… shouldn’t be dark green? On my x166 only takes 325.0.

would it calibrate the Airmatic new height sensors? I think I need to replace the rear ones but those will need to be recalibrated I think.
