There is no build date until MB accepts the dealer order. The good thing is that you may have a shorter wait than most of us as allocations must be coming soon.
+1

And, they typically use these early orders to figure out allocs, I believe, so you're a trailblazer!

Congrats, and indeed, please keep us posted.

A gaggle of MB's
Allocations are NEVER-EVER determined by "pre-orders" - allocations are in largest part by a much larger analysis of total are a business analysis, and when times are tight there is also a "political" component.

Tight vehicles make up only a very small portion of the total business...

Interesting. I heard that it was an influencing factor, but I could be wrong (as could my source).

This is interesting:

Top-stitched dashboard trim
Precise stitching brings elegant detailing to the upholstered covering of the dashboard in the GL63 AMG. Durable MB-Tex, renowned for its leather-like appearance and feel, covers the upper dash for a rich look with enduring quality.

I Thought the upper dash was leather

top stitch should all be leather- as its premium leather interior-
my confusion- gl550 on order- decently equipped- due this month- my dealer is super nice and told me last year that getting a gl63 will be tough- i dont really mind waiting- but for quad tipped exhausts, 0.2-0.5 secs faster 0-60, slightly different interior, larger resale loss, more pricy maintanence and probably waiting several months >6mos should i go for the 63 or stick to the 550 and use the extra 30k for a diff amg? really confused at this point!

I have a 550 and a 63 on order. Its not a $30,000 difference. If you add all available options on a 550 the price will come out close to $115 or more. Its $30,000 or more if you are comparing the MSRPs but that not a fair comparison. The 63 has most options standard which reduces that price difference. Even if you add rear entertainment and B&O to the 63 then the price shifts to high $120s. The maximum price difference will be at a maximum of $15,000.

Now it comes to personal preferences of a 550 vs 63. If the 63 will extremely limited production then they may hold their value better than other AMGs. I am going to see which way order allocations go before making my decisions. Your dealer may be right in terms of production and as Fabbrisd1 projects - the supply will be extremely limited.

I can Guarantee you that the 63 will lose its value as quick or quicker than the other V8's , its a myth that AMG vehicles hold the value better, I can buy a ML63 now with low miles for 1/3rd of the purchase price, or a 08 SLR with less than 1500 miles for 1/2 of purchase price.

Unless your getting the GL350 you should get the V8's to enjoy not for resale value, the trend for the future is Diesel not Gasoline, All the German manufacturers are coming out with Diesels now and even Hybrid Diesels which burn the equivalent of modern inline 4 while providing 90% the power of a V8.

The price difference is also minimal between a fully loaded 550 and 63 (10-15 grand) but the cost associated with maintenance and repairs is quite a bit higher in most countries, lower in the U.S

I agree - at this price point either 550 or 63 should be to enjoy and not resale. The cost of repairs - I will probably get an extended warranty and recommend one for either car just to be on a safe side.

exactly, MB USA says 2% of GL owners buy a 63 so you would full under a very exclusive club if you do decide to go that route.

Putting "1st adopters" aside - although that is a very thrilling party - some prospective GL63 owners might consider placing a May order for 2014 model production for Sept/Oct this Fall.

Keep the beat !

Only you can determine if it's worth it or not. Right now cost is ~10-15k more for the AMG vs. the 550 similarly equipped. So that's one factor that you have to determine. The other is if YOU can wait a few months. I'd much rather wait a little longer and get the superior vehicle than making a compromise and being sorry about it later- you may or may not have the same sentiments. In regards to cost, 10-15k is a lot of money, but in the context of the car, it's less than ~10% more than a 550. I don't mind the up charge if it means getting a much better car.

well said- the 10-15k diff is almost appropriate but in reality will be>20k with tax etc-
i think theyr both better cars- but yea- amg is an amg- trust me i know!

however on this forum - discussing a 90k+ car to begin with, means that in truth the price diff between these 2 cars really is not a real big deal- ~>10%- various factors most importantly- being able to get an alloc and a confirmed order is the biggest! theres no mb amg performance cent in my state here in the midwest- so yea getting one is the BIG deal- and i dont want to go with another dealer- mines awesome and very honest- never says no and always delivers- so i might end up having to wait a loong time for a gl63- so for now thinking of keeping the 13' 550 for now and using the difference to get another amg in the near future..

only a car guy gets another car guy--

I also completely agree that while its a significant amount of money but considering the price of decked out 550 and the 63 its becomes less significant. Its not like you can buy a well equipped 550 for $90,000 but would have to pay MSRP for the 63.

Waiting a little longer may make this difference significant as one may be able to get a deal on the 550. I don't know if the price of the 63 will change much even for the 2014 year - will depend on supply vs demand. 2014 will definitely bring the price of the 550 down with increased inventory.

Also I agree that right now getting an order confirmed and getting an allocation is a big deal. It may change in a year or two like it did with the ML63

What do you think on the price of the 2014? Do you think dealers will be willing to offer deals?

I think that's very good considering the short supply and demand. What number are you in line (if there is one) at your dealership?

I'm the first on the list here (long island) but I want to take delivery in May or June when my escalade lease is up
My dealer is #20 in new car sales in the country.. He assured me, that it wasn't a problem

gotta look at other factors too not just price, most of the kinks will be worked out by 2014 model year and allot of new safety features announced on the 2014 E-class will make it to this car. If I had a choice I would go for 2014 MY but the family has been car-less since June when the GL we had leased finished its term so I am out of luck!

No build date yet. I don't think allocations are in yet. I spoke to my SA at the AMG PC and to be honest he has no idea. It seems like he wanted to get off the phone. I just think for buying a $130K car MB sales people could be nicer. I will keep you posted if I find out.
