2014 GL550 to 2017 GLS 63

I just picked up my new 2017 GLS 63 today. I'm so happy with the upgrade. They said don't rev it higher than 4500rpm for the first 1500km but I accidentally hit that mark on my way home.

Any advice or tips on how to enjoy and take care of this vehicle?

Thinking about to do the same. How was the transition? Any regrets? Any sweet stories?

love the color . I bought one for my wife, and love driving it when we take it to haul the family. I did tune mine and its even sweeter.

Also, I am digging the murdered out black on black. You planning on blacking out the whole thing? Accessories and all? Give us a sneak peak of upcoming changes. You know you wanna....

So I've been eyeing this as the replacement for the GLE63S we currently have (need a bit more space). I have a GLS right now as a loaner from the dealer while my car is in for service. Is it me or does the middle/2nd row only fold down flat (doesn't flip up forward)? So how do you access the 3rd row (to get into the seat)?

And does the 63 come with electronically controlled *second* row seats as well? Or still manual?

Too bad there's now GLS63 S model available...

To access the third row, there’s a handle on the back of the seat that tumbles it forward. For a few hundred bucks, there’s an option to do that electronically with the touch of a button on the seat shoulder. I’m not sure if this is a common problem, but on mine, the seats routinely get stuck trying to tumble forward with the button. The dealer hasn’t been able to fix it, but I think I see now that it’s at least partially caused by the sides of the bottoms of the seats rubbing against each other when one tries to tumble forward, so maybe that’ll help them figure out a fix.

Hmmm. I saw the big grab handle behind the seat, but it only dropped the seatback so it flattens.

So the whole 2nd row seat doesn't flip forward? You basically have to hop up onto the back of the now-flattened seatback to access the 3rd row? Weird...

Ahhh. Makes more sense. I probably didn't pull hard enough. Ok now THAT'S a functional seat lol. Thanks!

How do you guys like the GLS 63? The GLS 450 I had had a scary amount of body roll (compared to the GLE63S I have). But it's a non-AMG model obviously. Otherwise, looked to be a solid full-size SUV. Too bad there's no S option....

Once the break-in period is done, make sure to drive it like you stole it. Best way to make sure an AMG stays healthy!!

The GLS 63 has Active Curve which keeps it pretty flat in the turns. It’s a phenomenal car. My criticisms are with Steering Pilot which seems to be designed primarily to kill people, and with some vibration on the 4-3 downshift that I don’t expect. The dealer hasn’t been super useful in resolving issues with either of those.

Just picked up a GLE63S last week and my god that thing is so much fun. Can't even imagine what it'd be like with a tune! What kind of figures did you get?

I'll admit I had never been a fan of the murdered out black on black until I saw those trucks. They look killer in person in a way that doesn't photograph all too well. Mine doesn't have the night package which I like since the front lip spoiler in silver matches the running board silver and diffuser nicely. Also the silver ring around the black wheels ties it all up nicely. I love this thing!

I could be mistaken since I'm really new here but I thought the GLS63 is the S version. There just isn't a detuned version like the GLE63 and GLE63S.

Yes, it is hands down THE MOST FUN SUV I've ever driven. And it's a LOT more fun than most SPORTS CARS I've driven. They really hit gold with the GLE 63S.

No. The "S" version of any vehicle isn't in the model name; it's after the 63 (63 S). And the "S" version typically raises the speed limiter to 180mph, sometimes offers a few extra hp/tq (than the non-S), and comes with a $1895 discount to any US-based AMG Driver's Academy course.

Mercedes recently changed its nomenclature (2016) to reflect all vehicle lines: A is mini, C is small, E is medium, and S is large.

- M-class: Midsized SUV, so became the GLE. Comes in S and non-S versions. GLE is akin to the E-class car.
- GL class: Large SUV, so became the GLS. Comes only in one trim: AMG GLS 63. No GLS 63 S offered. GLS is akin to the S class car.

And now they offer a small SUV, and following the above nomenclature, it's naturally called the GLA. GLA is akin to the A class car.

And so on and so forth.

Oh FD I knew the nomenclature has changed and the logic behind the new names. I meant the GLS class in the 63 format is actually comparable to the 63S from the GLE class. I figured since it has the 577hp engine and active curve and all that. It simply isn’t offered in a base 63 format. Unless there are standard options on the GLE 63s that aren’t available on the GLS63.

Gotcha. I thought you were assuming the S in GLS was the S submodel.

Hmmm...you may be right. 577hp is definitely no slouch, but the SUV is a good bit bigger and I'd imagine heavier than it's GLE counterpart, and likely to be loaded with more weight (stuff and/or passengers). So I was hoping there was a higher HP option. But, it's probably easy enough to get a tune and DP with high flow cats and reap even greater benefits...
