Switch to Tesla Model X??

Has anyone entertained this switch?

I love my MB AMG vehicles and have never owned electric, but love the tech and overall concept of electric.

Thoughts (positive and negative) appreciated.

Thanks!

Ignoring some of the upcoming electric products, absolutely nothing compares to the immediacy of the Tesla drivetrain. Even our AMGs require time to shift, whereas a Tesla just goes like NOW.

That being said, the Model X has some real world disadvantages which kept me from buying, mostly a result of the falcon wing doors. If you can get past the door issues and questionable interior quality for the price point, you really should test drive one. They are ridiculously satisfying to drive, in my opinion.

I own a Rav4 EV (with the tesla drivetrain), which is technically kinda slow. But it feels fast and the power is always available in city driving.

Good luck!
John

The lack of charging infrastructure across the US and quickly changing battery technogy keeps me firmly planted in the combustion world...for now. Not to mention the fact the Tesla has a proprietary charging port vs. the SAE J1772 standard.

Agreed with above. Drive too much; Tesla not ready for primetime if you drive a lot (15K+ miles/yr). Interestingly enough, the Porsche is touting 250mi charging in 15 min on the upcoming Mission E + release of 500 charging stations nationwide. So the technology is definitely getting there...

As for the low end response/torque, yes, it's definitely there in the Tesla, but the top end dies out while the AMG TT powerplant keeps going...

Unless you live in North Dakota, charging isn't really an issue. You'll charge at home overnight and start each day with an 80% charge, unless you want to charge to 100% before a big trip. On the highway, there are superchargers every ~125 miles or so, making charging quick and easy.

I love the Model X, but it falls short of the GLS63 in many ways. There's substantially more road noise, no CarPlay integration (which I much prefer to both MB's and Tesla's entertainment and nav offerings), the seats are not as comfortable or supportive and lack massage, the second row seats don't recline in most configurations, there's no all-around camera, and there's less interior room. That said, if I didn't have a GLS63, I'd certainly have a MX P100D.

Whiiiiich...is great if you're sticking to long distance driving along a major highway route. But when you're running all around town, or into some more rural areas, and there are no charge stations around there, forgetting to charge overnight once becomes a VERY costly mistake (vs in a car, just Googling the nearest gas station...). If they had a backup motor that used gas as reserve (ie a true hybrid), that would take that fear out immediately.

I do not have any interest in any Tesla products. The vehicles are built poorly, overpriced and there may be issues with brand viability. In addition I just do not care for the company management.
I have driven different Tesla products and they are fun and feel like golf-cart on steroids in terms of torque delivery but to me despite being 15yrs old they're still in their infancy and experiencing a great deal of teething problems.
