Should I just swap a GL63 into my 450? Or a 550 long block
I’ve had my truck give out at only 53,962 mi the engine went on it and has been sitting down since Oct and last driven in July mechanic gave me the run around and refuses to help me and only wants me to get rid of truck. I refuse to get rid of this truck as it has priceless value to me as it belonged to my belated Dad rest in Paradise. He loved this truck as it was renntech powered truck was a blast and used to take off like a rocket ship.
Love my 63 but the mileage is atrocious and also love my GLS450 due to the good mileage. The GLS450 will be more reliable as time goes on as it does not have active curve and ADS Struts and the V6 bi-turbo engine will also be more reliable. It is also more comfortable than the 63 as the suspension is not as firm but the 63 handles really great. Feels more like a sports car on stilts than an SUV. Oh, yeah, the brakes on the 63 are out of this world great but you can adapt the 63 brakes to the 450.
I guess it really depends on what you want in a car. Occasional driver or you don't care about MPG's, get the 63. If you are doing long hauls, get the 450.
Found a gl550 engine 2015 engine alone nothing else for 8500 will try to beat guy down to 8 flat but what ecu would I need to run it and is it worth putting this 550 engine into my 450 performance and strength wise, I just want to get another 100k or more out of my truck I don’t mind throwing money at it as long as I will get the same feeling of driving it before also what turbos can be used alternatively kindly let me know. Thank you
forgot to tell you the motor has 55k miles which is perfect as it’s only 1k miles more than what is on the truck currently

I lost my Dad last year. I can relate to your loss, and I am sorry to hear of it.
What do you think about moving on, and disposing of the vehicle?
I don’t want to give up on this ole girl she’s faithful and proven she’s a fighter, I really want to get her fixed am considering just having the truck trailered to Boston and being gone through By 603Mtech Autoworks Mike and the crew to fix this truck back to like before. And then order down pipes from renntech and put her back on the road

not sure why everyone is claiming these engines fail all the time. maybe all the terrible tuners out there disabling knock feedback? An AMG motor swap should be very straight forward on this. Why's it been sitting around 8 months? this can literally be done with in a week.
I have the m278 its been sitting down because no one wants to do the work because it’s a big Job i really hope that 603 MTech Autoworks in New Hampshire will consider doing the work and just going over the truck and also replacing aux battery and other components that needs to be addressed. In doing so I will have a like new truck. Even though my truck is a 13 I feel it was short lived and deserves a second chance due to 1 I love this truck and how it performed and 2. The Value and meaning it has to me is priceless.
I was able to get the history for the 2015 GL550 and was advised by Mike not purchase the motor because it had a nasty front end hit. So I’ve weighed my options out and it’s probably best to rebuild this same engine rather than buying a swap I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts and take on this thank you

The M278's fail quite regularly due to scored cylinders. Increasing boost via tune makes it much more pronounced. OP needs to sleeve the engine if he is staying with the M278, otherwise he will blow the replacement engine in short order.
salvage motor is the best by far option. There's very few places that are competent enough to rebuild one of these engines properly or anywhere close to oem. It's also never cost effective. Either that or consider purchasing an oem shortblock. they come with a 3yr warranty.

I second this suggestion. If you want to do it right get a rebuilt sleeved engine from @arsupisemnet I think his 4.7 long blocks run $7500, the 5.5s are only slightly more, though you might need to send him your motor and have it rebuilt.
