GL63 - Reliability?
I'm a DIYer and have had an E55 in the past. I've done lots of my own work, up to turbo replacements on Audi's. This question is for people who've put at least 20-30k miles on their GL63. I want to understand how costly the upkeep of one of these is. They're coming down into my price range and I've been poking around looking for a 2013 or 2014 with about 50k miles on it. How has yours treated you? What kind of things do I need to watch out for when looking for one? Is this one of the cars that just can't be reasonably owned without an extended warranty?
Thank you!
Fast forward 2 months after the purchase,
hydraulic pump for active curve control started to leak, $2300 repair bill
front axle makes noise on turning, $3000 to replace both front
Right there on the first claim, already make up for the warranty cost. I personally will not own a Mercedes with no warranty, especially any AMG models.

On a car that has an MSRP of over $100k, you most likely will break even or come out way ahead of any warranty you purchase.
The air suspension will eventually give out before 100k most likely.

The Best of Mercedes & AMG

Just purchased a 2015 GL63. 44k miles. Love it. In terms of Benz warranty. I own a 2010 S550 4matic with 78k miles, and 2013 CLS 550. Never had a warranty repair on My CLS 550. I bought a extended warranty from MB and it was not necessary. Yes repairs are expensive, but the warranty is also. CPO warranty is very different than factory. The best advice I have is to have your VIN number run by your local dealer. If the prior owner can afford an AMG they hopefully serviced it. That will tell you if you have an issue. I disagree that AMG is any different in reliability than a typical GL. I guess I shall see. Enjoy.
Since I last posted on this thread, I've had my cylinder head and valves replaced in addition to my torque converter and transmission.
The valve guides weren't pressed in correctly from factory and elongates the valve seat causing it not to hold pressure & a slight misfire.
The transmission issue was listed here (https://mbworld.org/forums/gl63-amg/...n-2nd-3rd.html) and thanks to this forum I took it in and got approved for a new torque converter and transmission.
I'm around 62,000 miles now and almost feels like a new car with all the new parts. I am very pleased.
Without my extended MB warranty, I was told the cost would have been over $20,000 in parts and labor. There were 1-2 other M157 (ML63 and possibly an E63, but I was the first GL63) at my local dealership that had the same misfire issue and had the heads/valves replaced.
The other thing I noted as I saw the engine rebuild was the valves had a decent amount of carbon build-up, which is normal. I use Seafoam regularly in the fuel tank now to try and keep the carbon build up to a minimum.
I think the MB ELW are the best deals out there and the pre-paid for me is also a great deal if you take your car to the dealer (which I do).

Seem like an okay deal?

To give you an idea, I got 0% off from my local dealer they wouldn't even match other MB dealers so I just called around and purchased over the phone with my VIN.
Good luck and let us know what you end up getting.

The best they can do on the 7/ 100 is $6,350 so I am going to pass on that as well. Thanks for your helpful input!

I highly recommend contacting her for Factory ELW, Factory pre-paid or aftermarket warranties. I shopped around and she was very knowledgeable and the most competitive.
