GL63 - Reliability?

Hello guys,
I'm a DIYer and have had an E55 in the past. I've done lots of my own work, up to turbo replacements on Audi's. This question is for people who've put at least 20-30k miles on their GL63. I want to understand how costly the upkeep of one of these is. They're coming down into my price range and I've been poking around looking for a 2013 or 2014 with about 50k miles on it. How has yours treated you? What kind of things do I need to watch out for when looking for one? Is this one of the cars that just can't be reasonably owned without an extended warranty?

Thank you!

Extended warranty is the first thing I purchased after getting a 2014 preowned last December. As it is 50K+ mileage, the only option is to get a 3rd party warranty.

Fast forward 2 months after the purchase,

hydraulic pump for active curve control started to leak, $2300 repair bill
front axle makes noise on turning, $3000 to replace both front

Right there on the first claim, already make up for the warranty cost. I personally will not own a Mercedes with no warranty, especially any AMG models.

Can you share who you went with for 3rd party warranty? I am looking to purchase coverage as well as mine is pass the 50K mark.

I have almost 50k miles on mine, very reliable - but if something does break (nothing has yet), it will be expensive. I also would highly recommend the Extended Limited Warranty (ELW), a CPO, or a comprehensive warranty.

On a car that has an MSRP of over $100k, you most likely will break even or come out way ahead of any warranty you purchase.

The air suspension will eventually give out before 100k most likely.

Hi there, I am coming to the end of my lease on my 2015 GL 63. I have 93 000 Km (57 700 miles) and almost no problems. When it was new, it had a problem where the headlight control unit got wet and the front left headlight stopped working. Dealer replaced this. Since then I’ve had one issue which wasn’t the cars fault. I hit a massive pothole going around 120 km/h. I destroyed a tyre and bent a wheel. A few weeks later I noticed a whining sound coming from the front of the car. The dealer said that the engine and gearbox mounts were gone and the front wheel bearing too. ZAR 40 000(not sure what currency you have) but paid for under warranty. The last issue I have been experiencing is a loud whining noise from the air conditioning fan but that’s all. It’s been a fantastic car to own would highly recommend it.

Dylan.

AMG may as well stand for "after-market guarantee" you need a warranty. I would never own any AMG product outside of warranty. A simple set of repairs would easily pay for warranty and then some.

GL63 AMG

Hi,
Just purchased a 2015 GL63. 44k miles. Love it. In terms of Benz warranty. I own a 2010 S550 4matic with 78k miles, and 2013 CLS 550. Never had a warranty repair on My CLS 550. I bought a extended warranty from MB and it was not necessary. Yes repairs are expensive, but the warranty is also. CPO warranty is very different than factory. The best advice I have is to have your VIN number run by your local dealer. If the prior owner can afford an AMG they hopefully serviced it. That will tell you if you have an issue. I disagree that AMG is any different in reliability than a typical GL. I guess I shall see. Enjoy.

Are you still eligible for the ELW?

Since I last posted on this thread, I've had my cylinder head and valves replaced in addition to my torque converter and transmission.

The valve guides weren't pressed in correctly from factory and elongates the valve seat causing it not to hold pressure & a slight misfire.

The transmission issue was listed here (https://mbworld.org/forums/gl63-amg/...n-2nd-3rd.html) and thanks to this forum I took it in and got approved for a new torque converter and transmission.

I'm around 62,000 miles now and almost feels like a new car with all the new parts. I am very pleased.

Without my extended MB warranty, I was told the cost would have been over $20,000 in parts and labor. There were 1-2 other M157 (ML63 and possibly an E63, but I was the first GL63) at my local dealership that had the same misfire issue and had the heads/valves replaced.

The other thing I noted as I saw the engine rebuild was the valves had a decent amount of carbon build-up, which is normal. I use Seafoam regularly in the fuel tank now to try and keep the carbon build up to a minimum.

I think the MB ELW are the best deals out there and the pre-paid for me is also a great deal if you take your car to the dealer (which I do).

We've had great luck with ours. Knock on wood, no major issues. That said, I purchased the extended MB 7y/135 mile warranty. It's probably unlikely that I'll keep it after that expires. Too many big ticket items that can go wrong. That goes for my E63s as well (same warranty).

I have 50k miles on my 2015 GL63. I am the second owner. My Mercedes tech pulled up all the warranty work and only routine maintainance was needed. I had them replace the motor mounts and transmission mounts because I knew they would cover it. So far my 2013 Ford Raptor has been much less reliable. go figure. I have had great luck with a 2013 CLS 550, and the 2015 GL63.

My dealer would never replace those unless it was documented failure on the mounts - lucky you. I even had the engine and transmission out.

My 2015 has been flawless with only routine maintenance and a lot of brake pads and tires. It is now out of warranty so I probably just jinxed myself.

Yes, brakes and tires... the true cost of big AMGs.

Have you considered an extended warranty? I'm beginning to look into it for my 2015 GL63.

2018 AMG GLS 63
Hi, I’ve got an 11 month old 2018 AMG GLS 63 with 14k miles. I can buy the 3yr/ 100k mile MB Extended Limited Warranty for $6,350 (its list is $7,100) and it is going up $250 August 1st. My wife and I like it and believe we will keep it 5-6 years to stave off the crushing depreciation at a minimum.

Seem like an okay deal?

Good deal, but ask for 18% off or $5,822. That's the most I've seen people get off (confirmed experiences). Might as well get the pre-paid to lock in the price. You save on the maintenance and you save on taxes (no taxes on the pre-paid). Not much discount there, you should be able to shave $25 off that though.

To give you an idea, I got 0% off from my local dealer they wouldn't even match other MB dealers so I just called around and purchased over the phone with my VIN.

Good luck and let us know what you end up getting.

Great advice and I really appreciate it. I get A and B and brakes done at a great Independent shop so don’t need the pre-paid.

The best they can do on the 7/ 100 is $6,350 so I am going to pass on that as well. Thanks for your helpful input!

I ended up buying mine from Tami at Mercedes Benz of Flynnwood - tamimccalmon@mercedesbenzoflynnwood.com

I highly recommend contacting her for Factory ELW, Factory pre-paid or aftermarket warranties. I shopped around and she was very knowledgeable and the most competitive.

Sorry BlownV8 - missed this, I did not call Cassandra. I got the price I wanted from Tami and just bought it.
