Exhaust mod

So I wasn't too impressed with the 35 exhaust sound. It is too quiet for my taste. Just got back from a reputable exhaust shop and got the resonator delete (red circle). The guy was telling me to also remove the secondary cat but I told him I want to hold off and see how the car sound first.

As you see from the photo, the arrow is the secondary cat. I think the car sounds much better as is now. No drone and more grunt at all RPM. Best $80 spent.

I’ve been looking at rerouting the exhaust on my GLB250. I thought I could get over the fake exhaust but I can’t. Over in Europe they offer this: https://www.kunzmann.de/shop/en/tuni....htm?sub=19055. Seems they don’t ship to the US tho. Aliexpress has something similar to but I’ve never ordered from them and don’t trust the quality. Lastly, I reached out to Brabus on their exhaust tips. Only $1295.....guess I should have expected that. Maybe someone on here has already converted theirs?

Post an update after a bit of driving. Is your exhaust noticeably louder at cruising speeds or just under acceleration?

Finally someone actually responds in this section. Thanks! It's either dead or no one cares. Anyways, back to topic, IMO, I wouldn't spend that much money on just exhaust tips especially Brabus. As far as I can find, only Supersprint has a cat back exhaust for the GLB. https://www.supersprint.com/ww-en/sp...ith-valve.aspx

For my 35, I can hear more growl in Sport+ when the values are open. The DCT farts are amazing lol. I need to make a video when I have a chance.

Does anyone know if Mercedes use "Soundaktor" like VW/Audi/BMW? That fake sound to simulate engine noise in the cabin?

That a nice $80 upgrade! I haven’t seen any forums mention a Soundaktor like fake sound, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

When I reached out to Brabus and received the $1250 quote for those tips I assumed it would be a compete replacement allowing the exhaust to flow thru/out those tips. I was wrong. Your paying just for the fake new tips. With that said, hard pass! I’ll just leave the exhaust stock and look into getting that resonator deleted.

Great video! I didn't hear any farts or crackles, do you have more videos of exhaust notes to share? Does it makes more difference if the exhaust flaps are open (S+) and closed (comfort)?

I think the tune of the GLB and GLA don’t have pops bangs or crackles unlike the A and CLA counterparts. Which is really a shame for an AMG. Wonder if removing the secondary cat would introduce some pops and bangs it at least some burbles.

is there a noticeable difference from stock? Thinking of doing a resonator delete on my GLA35 which is on the same platform. And do you have any videos of the sound from outside? Thanks!

Also, are you sure the box at the back towards the rear axle is actually a secondary cat, and not actually a muffler? The shape of it to me looks like a muffler than a cat (which is usually cylindrical in shape)__PRESENT

Almost all of the sound, including the pops when shifting are fake. Unplug the amp and it all goes away. Disappointing.

Just bringing up this thread again - I modified my GLA35 exhaust (which is same exhaust system as the GLB35) and it sounds 100000000 times better. You can read up on it here and I've also included some videos.

Also the square box that the OP has an arrow pointing to is not a secondary cat, it's actually just a front muffler which for some reason, MB/AMG decided to throw on the GLA35/GLB35 exhaust system to really neuter the sound. Remove that and you should probably have some pops/bangs and a more aggressive tone.__PRESENT

Dude your car sounds awesome.
I want to do that to my glb35.
I'm going to start with the front oem muffler and resonator delete.
No engine lights and issues at all?
Hoping this can give me more pops and bangs.
Also how much did you pay?

thanks man I’m loving my GLA35 more now after the exhaust mods.

yeah doing the front muffler and middle resonator definitely won’t throw any EML at all because you’re not messing with anything that has a sensor (e.g. Cat converter). Even with my custom rear axle back setup there is no EML.

edit: sorry in regards to cost, keep in mind I’m in Australia. And I got the whole thing done for about $1000AUD. removal of the front and mid muffler/resonator should only cost $300AUD for GOOD QUALITY work (including stainless steel pipes and labour). there may be cheaper places but I really wouldn’t cheap out on this kind of work. A couple of people I know went. Jesper route and ended up with exhaust leaks, only mild steel (not stainless) and bad welding.

Thanks for the reply.
Definitely doing this in the next week or so.
Another question.
In comfort mode is it still quiet? I prefer to make it quieter sometimes( have a young baby in the car sometimes) but having the ability to put it in sport plus and have it sound like yours in the video would be awesome.
Thanks

hi man, yep no problem! I’m actually in a similar situation as you. We have a 7 month old and I specifically wanted the modes to be there and with noticeable difference between Comfort mode and Sport mode vs Sport+ and Race mode.

here’s a video of the switching between the modes https://1drv.ms/v/s!As9XKNqJDFbiw28W19fd8qg---X_

I unfortunately don’t have a video of the sound difference in all the different drive modes unfortunately but you can hear the audible switch in the exhaust note when the valve actuated the flap and opens up.

So when I’m driving, not only does the volume and overall tone of the exhaust note change but also, pops/bangs/crackles/burbles are all off when you’re in Comfort or Sport, but they go nuts when you’re in Sport+ or Race.

That's awesome! Any changes in your fuel economy?
Do you think it will void your warranty?

No real changes to fuel economy. Was already getting pretty average fuel consumption due to the fact that I mainly do city driving and not much on the highway (avg from reset reads 19.7L/100KM).

In regards to warranty, I did a similar exhaust mod on my old CLA and had no issues with warranty. You’ll probably just lose warranty related to the exhaust but shouldn’t affect something like engine warranty or brakes or even transmission. I actually had you get my rear differential replaced on my CLA and they did that without charge. I guess it depends on your dealership and your service advisor. My service advisor is amazing and does everything he can to make me happy when it comes to looking after and serving my cars.

Just read your exhaust mod thread you linked to. Do you know what muffler you ended up going with? I finally had the fake exhaust sounds disabled and want to make this thing sound better!
