Annoying Noise from Rear Camera

When driving at low speed in urban areas, the rear camera opens and closes frequently as the car searches for a parking space making an annoying noise. Even disabling Parking does not prevent this from happening. I need the camera when in Reverse but can it be disabled when in Drive? This has never happened on any of my other Mercedes vehicles.

I do not believe there is anyway one can disable the parking space detection feature. This is an issue with all existing GLx models (including my EQB) that have the folding boot release which also houses the rear camera. See this thread: 2024 GLE Rear Camera Issue

My issue is not so much with the opening or closing but with a strange grinding noise at low speeds when the car goes over some road undulations, a speed hump, or a ramp opening. closing. As if there is something loose inside the boot door that is rolling around. I have applied some felt lining to the cover but while that has caused the noise to diminish a bit, it is still there. I have also ordered a silicone spra which I plan to apply with the rear camera engaged in the hope that it may lubricate the camera housing and see what effect it has on the noise. Shall share my observations when I complete this DIY.

Thanks for the update. This summer I may pull off the interior liner and install some foam padding and other sound deadening material like dynamat that I've installed in the wheel wells to reduce road noise. Please let us know what you find with your efforts.

I went about doing a simple DIY fix. The first thing I noticed was that the cover with the MB Star logo was a little bit off center (pic below). So I thought it could be that when the cover opens, it may touch or foul with the housing or body and cause the noise.

Rear Camera cover with Star Logo

Then I tried to figure out the rear Camera operates. There is an internal plastic cover over the actual camera that is actuated by a motor, and when it opens, the internal plastic cover also pushes out the external camera cover. Seems pretty straightforward - see the first couple of seconds of this video:
Rear camera motor operation

So I figured it could be that the internal camera cover fouls with the external camera cover and causes the noise, I had some felt lining lying around that I had picked up from Amazon
(no affiliation:
Felt Lining Felt Lining
) to line the bottle holder area and glovebox. I applied 2 layers to the internal camera cover. Be sure to not have the car keys on you when you push the boot opening cover so that the boot does not open as you go through with the repair.

Next I also found that the top of the external cover is very close to the internal housing where it is supposed to go in. So I also applied the felt lining on the top of the housing to cushion the impact in case the cover could hit the housing when the car body would flex. This requires a bit of patience as the felt lining is flimsy and won't go in easily inside the small gap. So I only took of part of the backing paper and used a thin spudger tool to push it inside before taking off the rest of the backing paper and pushing it against the top of the housing.

Took the car out for a drive. Was pleasantly surprised with the results and also that such a simple fix could eliminate most of the noise. You could still hear the noise sometimes over the larger bumps though. Here is my summary of the fix using a simple QnA. YMMV.

Has the noise been eliminated completely?
No.

Can you hear it still?
Occasionally when going over a large hump or a parking ramp entrance/ exit where the rear suspension has to flex a lot, and only if you are paying attention.

How much has it reduced?
Considerably. Actually, to the point that it will no longer be your primary irritant anymore and you can truly start enjoying the car. Passengers will not even notice it. The only reason you notice is because you know.

Am I going to be trying anything more?
Not really except probably applying a little bit of silicone spray to make the hinges smoother. I believe this is the most one can do from the outside. The next step would be to open up the internal panel and apply more padding/ insulation from the inside. That seems to be a really tedious and laborious task, with the real possibility of broken tabs or clips and may end up causing rattles which are going to be even harder and more painful to eliminate. Best left to the dealership. Here is a video for reference:

The rear camera on the 2024 GLB35 and probably on all GLB models is a different design. The camera is not hidden behind the star logo. (It is behind the star logo on my SL550 and CLS53.) On the GLB, the camera is mounted adjacent to the trunk latch handle. When needed it drops down from under the indentation for the handle. So while your description is helpful, it's not directly applicable to the GLB. In my experience with my other cars and the GLB, the noise is significantly more annoying with the GLB. In fact, I never noticed this issue with the multiple vehicles I have had with the camera behind the star logo.

Ya that behind badge design is only on the two door coupe or the four door "coupe" style vehicles, and some electric vehicles like EQB. Basically more "sporty" looking vehicles.

I think the reason why it pops out is because PARKTRONIC is calling for it, for you to check surroundings when the sensor detects an obstacle nearby or when traffic light view is on or AR is on. not sure.

Yes, you guys are correct. Its only the coupe and EQ models that seem to have the camera behind the logo.
This could likely be the fix that could work for the GLB then (a user has reported success with the GLE): https://www.mercedesgleforum.com/posts/23158/

In my effort at eliminating the camera noise completely, I was trying to figure out how the camera flap opening noise is filtering inside the cabin, and I noticed that there is 4-5 mm gap between the top of trim panel (behind where the rear wiper is located) and the glass. You can just run your fingers along the trim and check this. Thats likely one of the areas from where the camera noise might be coming inside the cabin. Is this the same for all GLBs or only my car? If it is just mine, then I will try and get it rectified from the dealership.
