My husband and I are still trying to decide on whether or not the GLC will be a good car for reliability in the coming years. Have the newer Mercedes models been a good purchase? We would prefer a car that takes diesel fuel as we drive in the country most of the time and not in the city. Also considering a Porsche Cayenne but they are not available for sale right now. Thank you.

Very happy with ours. We were looking at the 2016 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid, the Audi Q5, and curious about the new Jag. Very happy to go with the MB. Really happy to have purchased the GLC. And we saved a lot of money.
Remember however that the majority of GLC owners don't join forums like these. I would bet there are a lot of forum members here that joined because they have an issue or problem or are car enthusiasts. So, statistically, opinions here may be biased.

Yes, great place to learn about the GLC's features and foibles from a predominately friendly group of like-minded Mercedes fans. On the other hand, fan is the key word here, and one must understand that unwarranted praise tends to dominate in forums such as this. Good examples of that can be found in comments regarding expensive (some still evolving) electronic features of limited use and/or value and LED headlights, which in the case of Mercedes in general, have proven themselves to be only slightly better than halogens, but still with a poor rating. Of course, after spending thousands of dollars for some of these options, it's therapeutic having a place to go to seek validation. :-)

Re the original post, what does it matter if you drive in the city or country re diesel fuel as opposed to gasoline? The gasoline engines are very reliable and very efficient. And diesel fuel is more expensive and subject to cost swings due to weather.
As far as reliability, only time will tell. But Jaguar does not have a good reputation for reliability and I believe Audi is far less than MB and Audi is tied up with VW on the diesel EPA fraud issue.

You could look at a Porsche Macan.
I think for 2017 they are releasing a 4 cylinder turbo. 47000k base msrp.
If I could have waited I would have considered getting a minimal equipped one.
So far the car has been good but still too early in terms of reliability.

According to consumer reports, mercedes does not make reliable cars. The 2015 C-class on which the GLC is heavily based is ranked the least reliable car of last year. The GLC tentitively ranks among the better mercedes vehicle though. See page 58 for mercedes car profile. http://www108.zippyshare.com/v/gEihCQkx/file.html
Regardless on how it was ranked, I got a GLC anyways. The porche cayenne was rated quite reliable. Mercedes didn't have any major engine/drive train issues. I think most of it's issues were electronic. Also, it seems like there's a difference depending where the cars are built (ie a german MB factory vs a USA MB factory). I think the MB USA factories had some quailty control issues on the C-class.

The unforgivable issue with the GLC is the lack of an effective limp home mode.
Any safety system fault will leave you stranded.

I have no faith in Consumer Reports. One week they rate washers and dryers, the next week computers, the next week autos. Nor do I necessarily trust the auto ***** writers for the auto magazines. But MB does have a very enviable record/reputation for longevity. They rated the CLA 250 one of the worst cars and I have not had any problems in one year. Jaguars have long held a reputation for problems, especially electronics, dating back over 50 years. "Why do the British drink warm beer?????......Refrigerators by Lucas Electronics.

^ I agree it's somewhat mindboggling how consumer reports spits out a rating. What confuses me is how they rated the 2015 C-class and etc. Flawless drivetrain, engine and etc rating but receives the worst overall rating. Consumer reports tends to rate Mercedes hashly. And perfers Toyotas/Lexus year after year...
Another rating site to look at is JD-Power. They have 2 sets of ratings. One for predicted reliability done wtihin 1 year of the vehicle and another for dependence survey done 3 years after.

The closest you'll get to the GLC is it's predecessor, the 2015 GLK which scored really well. The GLK has previously won several of JD-power's reliability awards. The other to look at is the 2015 C-Class since hte GLC is largely based on the C-class and shares many parts with it. The C-class was redesigned in 2015 and thus went from very reliable to one of the least. Hopefully they got most things worked out in 2016 for the GLC though it is the first model year for the GLC. http://www.jdpower.com/cars/Mercedes...GLK-Class/2015

Consumer Reports rates cars in two areas. A Road Test which their auto editors conduct and Predicted Reliability with data from their Owner Surveys. It's not uncommon for a car to receive a good Road Test score but less than stellar Predicted Reliability based on the Owner Surveys.

Consumer reports rated the 2015 C-class the least reliable car of the year, some -130% less reliable than the average car. The predicted reliability on the GLC ws far better.

Those early builds of the C from what I hear were not good.... but from what I understand, they've gotten better.

Mercedes are Mercedes and built to be Mercedes, not shared across numerous sub-brands from a vast parts bin, e.g., VW, Audi, Porsche.

I honestly think the Macan and the Audi Q5 look as good if not better on the outside than the GLC but the interior of the GLC is far better than any car I've been in it's class.

I just looked at the rating on consumer report and the only problem MY15 had was in car power equipment. And they rate in much worse than average? WTF?

I like the styling of the Macan, but I do not care for the Q5. Maybe they will improve it for 2017, but it looks too bland for me right now. I agree that the GLC interior has n interior that is heads above others in this class.

Regret not holding out for special order with Burmeister sound system and night package. But then again, it was a long wait and I needed a new ride asap, so what can you do?
