OEM Roof Rails for Coupe - beware

Warning to anyone ordering OEM rails for the Coupe, the noise is horrendous! They may look aero but the sunroof cannot be used open. It howls. Then to add insult to injury, took them three try's to get one to me not damaged. They can't even do that.. third one still had a small ding but I was desperate. Add to that the height.. looks terrible. So buyer beware. Find something else.

I left a review of the dealer (OMG what a nightmare that was) and when speaking to MB I mentioned this but its doubtful they will do anything. The issue is what does work, looks good and does not make that awful noise.

The MB crossbars are known to be noisy. They are also too tall for most people. As others have done, I plan to avoid the MB parts and use Thule AeroBlade crossbars instead. Here is the setup I got for mine:

https://www.rackattack.com/car-rack-...enz/glc-class/

The crossbars attach to the factory side rails on the GLC SUV. Unfortunately, the GLC Coupe doesn't have side rails. You will need to talk to them about which feet to use to mount the bars on the Coupe's fixed mounting points, and you will need to consider if they will interfere with your pano roof as a result.

Both the MB pieces and the Thule pieces come with a warning that they may interfere with the pano roof. This may be the case if you mount things that point downward and protrude below the bars. If you mount things that simply strap to the bars and don't protrude, you can use your roof just fine.

We only have the standard sun roof, not pano so not an issue. Its between Thule and Yakima I guess.

With the GLC SUV with the roof rails, the issue with trying to open the roof is less to do with the height of bars above (although that could still be an issue) and more to do with the bar attachments which usually clamp around the bar and catch the sides of the roof glass when it elevates. Easy to forget that the roof is full width so right up against the bars.
I have a set of Atera Signo aero bars with a Kamei box on top with t-tracks. They work really well but the roof catches in the bar clamps if you try to open it. As I use it for skiing, not a big issue for me.

Have you tried not opening the sunroof all the way?

In my coupe there's something weird going on. When I push the sunroof open button, it stops a bit short of opening all the way. When I open it all the way, the wind noise becomes MUCH worse

It was the racks. I just went to Rack Attack and had some Thule aero racks installed. Noise GONE and they look better. Lower profile and no issues opening my standard (non pano) sun roof.

As with most new cars, the GLC has a "comfort" position for the sunroof where wind noise is not as bad as it would be if the roof was fully open. The designers test the roof at various positions and speeds to determine this position. This is the not-quite-fully-open position you get when you use the auto-open button.

Wind noise and buffeting are not too bad if the roof is in this position. Manually opening the roof beyond this point will result in excessive wind noise and/or the dreaded thump-thump buffeting in your ears.

You can try opening both rear windows about 2 inches. If that doesn't solve the problem, try using the comfort position if you're going to be going above 35-40 MPH.

Congrats! Problem solved. You really can't go wrong with RackAttack if you're in the USA.

Those are the same Thule (model 7601a/7601b) crossbars that I purchased. The design is slicker and much more aero than the MB bars. Hopefully you were able to return the MB pieces.
