Hands Free Access to rear hatch

In reading the Owners' Manual, I discovered you can kick your foot towards the back of the GLC and it's supposed to open the rear hatch if the vehicle is off and you've got the FOB in your pocket.

Here's a video with the S-class demonstrating the feature. It's not working for me on the GLC.

Anyone got tips how to use this feature?

Solution: Get the Advanced Parking Assist Package

Did you pay for the option? Not a freebie.

Hands Free Access is an option. For MY 2017 it is included in the Advanced Parking Assist package. Do you have this option on your vehicle?

There are also different techniques for different vehicles. For our 2017 GLC300 you have to wave your foot from right to left under the center rear bumper. It took some experimenting to get a consistent response.

All the options are in the manual but it doesn't mean it is on your car, on the GLC you kick your foot under centre of bumper and remove it, works really well.

Dug up the owner's manual online. I've got KEYLESS-GO, but looks like you need KEYLESS-GO and HANDS-FREE ACCESS. Glad I didn't spend more than 30 seconds behind the car looking foolish.

waving the foot under the bumper needs a large swinging arc to make it work.

I believe is the way the sensor is designed: to detect an object that appears suddenly within the area of sonar field and the disappearance of the object within a certain time frame.

so if the side to side swinging arc is not large enough, the hatch opening/closing will not be activated.

kicking and retracting the foot in one swift action works best for me.

Yup - I have developed a Bruce Lee style rising kick technique.
My original attempts (more Chuck Norris) were less successful.

Mine also works well. Very convenient.

The dealer warned me to be careful when washing the car. You could put a cleaning brush under the rear bumper and, if picked up by the sensors, the rear door could accidentally open while you are washing your GLC.

Yep, just bought a 2022 GLC300 and thought since it had key less go that it would have the hands free hatch function. It does not and it must be ordered separately. Does anyone know if it can be added?

I dont think waving your foot side to side was ever the proper technique to activate the hatch in a GLC. I have a 2019 and raising your foot up and then straight back has always worked flawless for me. I have the coupe with factory installed trailer hitch and its still worked without a problem from day 1.

This video posted by MB depicts the technique quite clearly - posted in 2015.

I've always made an arc with my leg, like I'm fanning out a deck of cards, and it works every time. Love having it!
