Two year/ 42,000 kms ownership experience
Hard to believe those 2 years has passed since taking delivery of my new GLC 250d. So what has it been liked – the Good, the Bad and the Ugly:
the Good

the Good
- Smooth ride (after tyre/ rim change)
- Comfortable and quiet interior
- Good handling for a SUV (after tyre/ rim change)
- Very economical @ 6.2lts/ 100 kms average (diesel engine)
- Nothing has fallen off, broken or rattles
- Paint & chrome has loss none of its new car shine
- Impressive safety features
- Excellent headlights
- Received no refund from MB when downsizing rim size from 20” (standard in Australia) to 19”
- The windscreen is prone to chipping due to its relative upright design
- The on/ off engine function is noisy and no permeant means of turning it off
- The Command system is chucky and slow
- Need to buy an expensive MB spare wheel & tool kit
and the Ugly - At first, Run Flat Tyres and scrubbing
- At first, the stereo performance
- Wiper shuddering

congratulations on an excellent write up for your 2 year anniversary.
I too have a 250d, yes 2 years old and yes serviced with 42000km !! That’s a worry ! Lol.
some difference to yours, I ave around 7.1 on each tank of city running, much better on rural runs.
Fuel pump replaced under warranty in first 6 months, took two breakdowns and flat tops to dealer to diagnose and rectify, all good since.
Crabbing an issue, Dealer gave good support and negotiated with MB Aust to replace all 4 with Goodyear All Season, M&S, MOE for my 20” AMG rims.
Transformation really good, wear seems much better. Regret not buying air suspension when ordering as steel springs too harsh.
I would love to test the car on 17 to 18” rims with conventional tyres for ride comparison and also winter crabbing, however happy with All Season’s currently, only concern is if stopping distance greatly extended with All Season compromise Vs Summer tyres handling and stopping distances.
Your Pirelli MOE are basically runflats, so not sure if your ride comfort would improve if you were on conventional tyres, like Michellin Latitude Sports 3 tyres ? Wish our model had proper full TPMS, not half hearted warning syst . Looking to fit Chinese aftermarket, fully integrated TPMS that works with dash display and audio. MB at this point do not offer the upgrade ! But Chinese do, ho hum.
Windscreen has been fine, but I had it cleaned again when I got paint treatment after purchased from a specialist. Still on original wipers, needed to replace rear wiper however.
Some trim needed replacing on rear after towbar installed by dealer, minor issue with clips damaged during process, so far items of trim have been replaced without issue.
Needed to replace brake pads and front discs, rears will get another 10k I think. I am normally very good with my brakes, seems using cruise control and lane departure all the time means car is constantly performing meany brake adjustments to all wheels as I blissfully drive along in free wheeling.
Thank you for info re stereo, was upgrade to replacement speakers difficult to expensive, on a rating. 1. - 10 ? How did they go with base speakers?
Absolutely love the intelligent headlights, superb !
Command System much better as I learn shortcuts. Love the voice activation for navigation, 90% accurate and easy to manage.
still need to re read manual and load music to hard drive in system with folders, etc.
auto parking fair, I found my previous car from VW family more responsive in parallel parking. I find in traffic the car travels about 2 car lengths past the “hole”, and you run the risk of following traffic blocking the park you are trying to reverse into, needs fine tuning to read park quicker to allow earlier activation.
Windscreen is starry pock marked, cannot resurface to polish out, happened very early on and remained same, generally easy to see out, just visible with acute sun on screen at certain angles.
would I like the 3.0l, 6 cyl diesel , hmmm ? Or a hybrid - only if it had the torque performance and ease of use of the 9 speed gear box.
That said, car can be jerky in accelerated and slowing down, with some transmission hunting ? In Sports and Sports + mode. 98% of my driving is in Comfort mode and it behaves very nicely.
Would I buy again, yes, safety, ride ( generally) lights, etc makes for an all rounder that is a star performer.

It probably depends on the speed you are driving!
I find that mine sees the 'hole' immediately the rear of the car passes it.

Hi Teckno. Glad to see you enjoy your car. The Focals cost $1590 installed. As they sound very good, not going to upgrade amp, etc.; albeit, bass not my thing. Incidentally made a typo regarding tyres. They are MO not MOE as originally reported - sorry for the confusion.
In regards to next vehicle. Change coy cars every 3 years. Waiting to see the new 2019 GLE 350e.

the Good
the Good
- Smooth ride
- Comfortable and quiet interior (after replacing with Acoustic glass, even better)
- Good handling for a SUV (compared to Honda CRV, my mom's car)
- Nothing has fallen off, broken or rattles
- Impressive safety features (saved me once!)
- Excellent headlights (probably the best headlights I've used)
- The non Command system is rubbish. Slow to connect iPhone
- Fuel economy for petrol. 8km/l
- Windscreen wipers. The worst wipers I have ever experience in any car. It judders and judders

2017 GLC 300
Good, bad and ugly: 2017 GLC 300, 37,000 miles
The good:
- The seats, not just good, but great. I reluctantly traded my beloved BMW 328d because the sport seat was so uncomfortable it was giving physical problems for which I was seeing a doctor, getting spinal shots, and doing physical therapy. After my annual marathon roundtrip across the country, ~14k miles in 80 days, this time in the Mercedes, I no longer needed pads, cushions, bolsters, etc. In fact, my butt felt much better after the trip than when I started. Indeed, the seat seems to have cured the problem! Medical researchers take note.
- Headup display. I bought this particular car for that feature and haven’t regretted it for a minute
- Smooth, quiet, comfortable ride, especially after having the dealer install acoustic glass (under warranty) and Michelin Premier A/S. It feels like a true luxury car now.
- Burmeister sound system.
- 360 degree camera
- Fuel economy consistently around 38-30 mpg. The Michelin tires seem to have boosted it a mile or so per gallon.
- CPO warranty. I bought it with under 4,000 service loaner miles and got close to five years unlimited miles, then bought two more years. This car won’t go off warranty until January of 2024 and at the rate I drive it will have well over 200,000 miles on it!
The bad:
- Command navigation system. Steep learning curve and not as capable as the BMW or Audi systems but acceptable once you get used to it. The Mercedes ME app has improved a lot in the last few months. It used to be hit or miss to try to log in; now it works every time, so far, and makes POI input so much easier than trying to use the nav system in the car.
- Body tightness. It doesn’t have the rock solid carved-from-one-piece-of-iron feeling that my Audi A3 had and that I expected from Mercedes-Benz.
The ugly:
- Nothing. I haven’t had the tire scrubbing or wiper stuttering problems other posters have reported, and brake squeal has been minor. I am thoroughly enjoying the car.

Another good review. I think these long-term owner experience give prospective buyers/ new owners a clearer picture of what to expect. So far all appears positive; albeit, a tiny sample so far.

agreed, the app has gotten much better, used to fail to log in a lot, now its rare (but still does happen)
