Recommendations on extended warranty
In any case, the quote for an additional 2 years of CPO warranty was $2895. I turned it down. If this car is in the shop more than twice for warranty repairs in the next year, I'll get rid of it. And if it starts costing me nearly $3k in the years after that, I'll dump it then as well. I've only had one car, a 2001 740iL, that needed that level of repairs. That car, as much as a I loved it, was a garage queen. I won't go through that again. But the other 5 cars I've bought through this dealership have been mostly trouble free after the warranty ran out. That said, I'm now a low mileage user. I put less than 10k/yr on my car, so things don't go wrong as quickly as they used to when I was driving 40k/yr. I could maybe justify the cost if I was still commuting 100 miles a day.
I am at the other extreme: my 2017 has now passed the 120,000 mile mark and still has over two years to go on the CPO warranty before the extended warranty kicks in, probably somewhere around 200,000 miles. I figure the CPO warranty has already saved me around $5000. If I decide not to keep the car that long, I think I can cancel the extended warranty and get a refund as long as I do it before the extended warranty kicks in. That's the case with extended warranties that begin after the new car warranty is up so it should be the same after a CPO.
Or, if you sell the car privately, my understanding is that the extended warranty can be transferred to the new owner, giving you a huge advantage over the dealer. Think about it: where else can a used car buyer get a car with perhaps well over 100.000 miles on it that comes with unlimited mileage coverage for up to two years? It boggles the mind, but it looks to me like that's how it works.
