Dealer say fan noise is normal, 2020 vehicle

Hey everybody was hoping to get your help here.
i picked up a 2020 glc 43, and the first day I noticed what I can best describe as a fan noise coming from the center console. It was so loud and annoying that I returned the car to the dealership. They tried to fix the car for almost a month, and they gave it back to me telling me it’s a normal noise, all glc43’s make that noise.

has anybody noticed this?
really appreciate your help
love the car, just not the noise!

Hard to understand a noise on a forum but the best thing to do is have the dealer compare with another car, if it doesn't have the noise you can show the dealer. If it does maybe it's normal.

Sounds like typical "dealer-speak" and I would maintain good records and bring it in again repeating the same complaint. They will probably repeat their same alibi, and not repair it, then when you bring it in the third time and it is not repaired you will probably have a "Lemon-Law" case against them and can make them buy it back from you. Watch how fast they fix your problem then as they never want to buy it back.

Question: If all GLC 43s make that noise, why did they have it for a month to figure that out?

Just throwing that out there and I hope you are able to get it corrected to your satisfaction.

Could you post a video of the noise? Does the noise change in relation to HVAC settings? etc etc

Mine is a 2020 GLC300 Coupe.
I also noticed the noise once before I read your post, and I thought it was from the center console, thinking it was from the air conditioning fans.
A few days ago, I heard the noise again. While I tried to take a video clip, I tried to switch off the air conditioning and even the multimedia system and found that the noise persisted.
Eventually the noise was from the vented plastic cover housing interior lamps. (See in the attached picture)
I'm not sure if the noise you found was from the same part.
Because the noise is not here all the time (I suspect the noise was from some ventilation fan(s) inside of the vented plastic cover when it kicks off), I will ask my dealer about this next time when my vehicle needs the first maintenance.

Bull****, it's not normal. The dealer tried to feed me that crap as well. Mine didn't do it from the start, but developed that sound and slight vibration in the dash after a few months. They finally ended up replacing the blower motor and guess what... the sound/vibration went away.

Everything they can't figure out seems to be "normal." They've told me they have looked at new vehicle on the lot and they do the same thing. I've call them out on that before because the loaner GLC they put me in didn't do it.

There seems to be a similar thread at this forum. Apparently only an issue with 2020 GLC.

glc fan

My GLC 300 2020 is having same issue with fan noise. I brought it to the service dept and service manager told me that the noise is due to MBUX getting too hot because it is close to the engine in the front and a fan comes on to cool it off but the fan has 3 speeds and comes on high and and is loud. He says Mercedes knows about the issue and is just saying this is not a problem and does not have a solution for this problem because they are saying its "normal." I contacted customer service multiple times and they have done absolutely nothing but give me the run around. Seems they are very aware of the design flaw and trying to just ignore it and not address customers concerns about it. Only thing customer can do is seek legal action/lemon law. Definitely not a luxury vehicle with this type of defect.

2020 glc63 owner here, I have the same noise issue as well. High pitch fan whining/buzzing noise coming from center console area that sometimes gets so loud it's very annoying. Was difficult trying to describe and reproduce the sound to the service advisor because the sound isn't always at its loudest, but finally did manage to bring the car in one day when it was loud. Clearly the sound was coming from the center console area because when you open and close the center cupholder cover, you can hear the sound get louder as you open it and that the sound is coming from within that area. They informed me that it was normal and being caused by one of the internal fans cooling the unit, and pulled another 2020 GLC63 to show me the other car made a similar noise as well, even though it wasn't at its loudest at that point.
Pretty frustrated.

I love how they think pulling up another vehicle with the same problem somehow makes it "normal" or acceptable for vehicles in this price range.

noise recording

Made a recording of the noise I've been getting just to see if it's the same as what other people have been experiencing:

Doesn't really sound like a fan noise. Has a sort of buzzing thing to it. If indeed it has something to do with cooling a computer component for MBUX then I would think they could have used a computer cooling fan of which I've never heard one that sounds like this. The sound you recorded doesn't sound like a fan or a fan moving air.

Ya it definitely sounds like more of a buzzing noise to me as well, which was how I described it when I first brought the car in, but then my service advisor suggested it's more of a small fan noise or "blower" ..

I wonder if it has to do with the wireless charging unit. Does that part pull out?

I couldn't find a way to remove the wireless charging pad. Yesterday the high pitched buzzing started again (been happening once every 2-3 days). I tried turning off the NFC setting in the System controls and it seemed to stop the buzzing sound. Not sure if it's just coincidence or could be the cause.. but would that make any sense, for the NFC setting to be on and only causing the buzzing sound intermittently? The sound occurs whether or not I'm charging my mobile phone with the wireless charger - and the wireless charger still works with the NFC setting off. Only thing left I can do is wait a few more days to see if the sound persists or not.

Found out that the noise I was hearing was coming from a small fan behind the wireless charger (inside, behind the console unit). Turning the NFC off didn't resolve the issue. Tried having some sound dampening material placed in that area (the console was removed and sound dampening material placed around the fan and inside that compartment). Noise was reduced slightly, but can still quite noticeable.

Seems like poor insulation. More entry level cost cutting.

Should I bother getting it fixed as it ruins the overall experience with the car 🙄
Will they even know what to do?

IMO I'd leave it, unless there is an easy and obvious remedy. In the OP's case they have already demonstrated ineptness or they simply don't care. In the this case, perhaps another dealer.

Otherwise forget it as you will end up chasing it and just getting more frustrated. It's just symptomatic of MB's declining quality and don't care attitude. They mass produce these vehicles with the focus being put on flashy tech and gadgetry not "build" quality.
