first off Hello everyone I’ve been a long time reader final decide to join!
I am having a hard time removing the front grill
star emblem on my 2020 Glc300
i watched the vids on some previous models and you simply turn and push the star counter clock wise and it’s removed.....well I tried it all the thing won’t budge
i even managed to slice up my wrist trying to get in behind the grill and turn from there as well but no luck.....is there a clip u have to release or maybe a tool I have to use?

been there, done all and frustrated that nothing worked to budge it. finally i came to conclusion that the star is stuck with a sensor box (Check the attached) that u need to remove the whole grill to reach and remove the star. that sensor box is related to cruise control and active brake assist (so even if you dont have distronic u still have the sensor box). this has changed from previous models who had these sensors in bumber or under the front windshield mirror.
hope this helps and let me know once u remove as i want to remove myself and install the illuminated star. so far, everyone is saying cannot be done without affecting the sensors.

Good info here. I talked to a service guy at my local Mercedes shop here and he said it twists right off. It felt awfully tight, and I was afraid I was going to snap something if I applied any more force. Good to see here that someone knows more about it then the service guy. Has anyone successfully done it and removed the star?
I just talked to the service guy again and he said that you DO NOT have to remove the grille or mess with any sensor box. He said it just twists off counter-clockwise. I tried again with A LOT of pressure and still couldn't get it to budge. At this point I guess I don't know which info is accurate.

that is 100% right. ive been there as well and snapped several pics of the sensor box, wanted to install an illuminated star and all is saying it will affect the sensors.
Can't use "Illuminated Star" on cars with DISTRONIC® or "Active Brake Assist"
I believe that wesram is correct. In my 2021 GLC-300, the specified sensor box is in an assembly that is part of the MB star whose background is a glass surface, see Figure 1. My car does not have the Driver Assistance Package, but it does have "Active Brake Assist with Autonomous Emergency Braking and Rear Cross Traffic Alert". You can verify that you have this by going into the car's "Settings/Assistance" menu as shown in attached Figures 2 and 3. My guess is that these sensors need to be able to "see" thru the star, hence the use of the "Glass Star".
The "Illuminated Star" (PN 166-817-74-00) as shown in Figure 4 has a solid plastic background surface. As such, I would doubt that you can replace the "Glass Star" with the "Illuminated Star" and not completely mess up the functionality behind these sensors.
MB does indeed state that the "Illuminated Star" cannot be used with cars that have the DISTRONIC® system (i.e. Adaptive Cruise Control). By their definition this means one of three flavors of the system:
DISTRONIC® is the basic adaptive cruise control system. Although it’s identical to DISTRONIC PLUS® in most respects, DISTRONIC® will not bring you to a complete halt. Rather, the feature will pass control back to the driver when your speed drops below 15-20 mph.
DISTRONIC PLUS® stays active, even if your speed drops to zero. In general, while DISTRONIC® might be offered as a standalone feature, DISTRONIC PLUS® is usually offered as part of the Driving Assistance package.
DISTRONIC PLUS® with Steering Assist offers even more advanced convenience. In addition to controlling your speed and follow-distance, this technology keeps track of road lines and limits, along with other vehicles in your periphery. If you start to exit your lane by accident, or try to merge into an occupied space, the feature will intervene to keep you centered.
As such, I believe that MB will need to update the requirement and state that the "Illuminated Star" cannot be used with either the DISTRONIC® system or cars with "Active Brake Assist with Autonomous Emergency Braking" functionality.
