Question Huge Variances in Estimated Miles Per Tank - WHY?

Feb 13, 2025

My 2024 GLC-300 displays the largest variances in projected miles per full tank of gas, of any car I've owned over the past 3 decades.

On the high side, a full tank has been estimated to provide 405 miles. (Last Summer)
On the low side, today's fill-up is giving me a paltry 262 miles.

In your experience, what is the reason for this with the 2024 GLC-300?. Our 2022 GLE-350 varies too, but not nearly as much.

Thanks in advance for sharing what you know on this subject.

The calculation is based upon the most recent driving pattern.

Driving habits have been the same. The big variances in miles per tank occur randomly, with no pattern related to driving.

My most recent driving pattern is the same as it has been since obtaining the car in April 2024. I'm retired..following the same routine every week. Just went over 10,000 miles.

The biggest variances seem to be related to the season. I've read in other forums that "Summer" gas is blended differently than "Winter" gas, which could account for the car giving higher mileage-per-tank estimates before Winter arrived to Chicago.

Today I did fill up with NON Top-Tier premium gas, (Speedway) which could be the reason why only 262 miles was/is estimated from this full tank. (The usual "Shell" station was closed today.)

Interesting. Yes the season can be a big factor. Driving in snow eats fuel.

Yes, winter and summer blend does make a difference, winter blend has less power (or was it the other way around?) and affects fuel efficiency, then tire pressures dropping affecting rolling resistance also affects fuel economy, winter tires will affect it, having half tank versus full tank also, nin top tier without certain additives also, as well as how much cargo, the route took, the engine oil temperature, etc. So many factors that add up to decrease that fuel economy.

A range of 262 miles seems exceptionally low even considering all the variables that could affect it. I have never seen anything that low on my car. If I was you I would manually calculate the mileage for a couple of fillups and see if the GOM (guess-o-meter) is near reality. If it is not, then maybe your dealer can do a reset.

First time hearing that term, turns out it is an EV term, learning something today
