Map Update for 2023 GLC 300

Anyone know how to update the Navigation Map database for a 2023 GLC 300 SUV? The MB Service Dept quoted $250 to update it.
I live in Pennsylvania but plan to drive to California and would like an up-to-date nav base rather than the 2022 software that came with the vehicle.
I know I can use Google Maps in Car Play, but I like the voice capability of the "Hey Mercedes" and the large central multimedia display.
Please help with any DIY suggestions

Previously they didnt really provide major map updates yearly but bi-yearly. That $250 might get you 2024/early 2025 maps which wouldnt put you that far ahead of what you have. Google Maps/Waze can be "talked to" as well to a degree through your phone and will be alot closer to reality. Also note that roads dont change that much unless you're driving into a new section of town

$15 a month mercedes me connect package includes online map updates. I pay 150 for a year since I enjoy the other features like remote lock/unlock, streaming apps, etc. You'll need a USB flash drive and a USB dongle (which transfers data not just power like the one supplied with the car) I have a blue Samsung usb c flash drive to make my life easier. You can cancel after a month and spend only 15 plus flash drive if you need it.

The instructions can be found here

Activation Code

With a manual update using a USB flash drive, the Owner's Manual says you may need to use an Activation Code.(Owner's Manual p.638 shown, see my Red Arrow).
Do I need to find the Activation Code? Or is this not necessary when updating the factory installed OEM Nav Map Database that came installed in the vehicle?

The activation code is not necessary when updating from the Mercedes Me portal logged into your account. The software automatically licenses the update. iOtherwise, it will ask for the code which you must purchase from a dealer. For example if you use the free universal downloader online without logging into you account, it will ask for an activation code.
