Break-in Period

I’m expecting delivery of my ‘20 GLC 43 at the end of February. Do these engines require a break-in period, limiting speeds etc? I’ve seen contradictory information about whether this is needed, Thanks very much.

Yes, it will be in the manual. Basically, for the first 1000 miles: NO full-load on the engine and NO kickdown. Stay below 4500rpms. Max vehicle speed of 85mph. After 1000 miles: slowly increase load on engine.

There’s debate on how closely to follow the break in guidelines. For example, some forum users believe that the engine can be pushed a bit during break in as long as it’s properly warmed up. Thankfully, the digital gauges make it very easy to tell when the engine and transmission are up to temp.

Also, Comfort driving mode is recommended for the break in.

i always take it easy until the car is warm for life of car.

I always breakin a motor for 1k miles. For me, this means going easy with rare pressuring it. Also, no cruise control to avoid a constant rpm. I’ll go up to ~3.5kRPM whatever speed that buys me but not cruising constantly a static RPM.

oil changes 5k miles.

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought oil change is every 10k miles on these cars.
service A was due at 10k miles or so, service be is not for another 8k miles or so.

That is correct by MB standards, but some like to do earlier changes. Many theories on why earlier or just can make one sleep easier, but it's their money. Could be some truth/fact to doing earlier, but an oil analysis would come into play to be sure. Not knocking earlier changes/maintenance, as I've done it too.

I’ve taken the car to the drags the first couple 100 miles. Tuned at 1000 miles and turbos upgraded at 2500 miles. Car is built much more tough than the bmw and Audi’s. Enjoy the car and don’t think about the hoax of break in periods

get those gaskets sealed and drive the damn thing like you stole it. Either way it’s getting traded in to the dealer and it’s the next guys problem

I always break mine in like I am going to get rid of it in 1.5 years since I always do....

All kidding aside, just don't be crazy and don't let it idle for much time and vary the RPMs(no cruise control) and it will be fine. Punching it here and there will not hurt anything.

I'm surprised nobody brought up the Motoman method of breaking in an engine. Just sayin'
