What is finance going to throw at me?

It's been 14 years since I bought a brand new car, so I'm a little rusty. Also, the GLC 43 I have on order is my first Mercedes. Just wondering what the finance department is going to try and throw at me?

After I negotiate on price of the car, price of my trade-in (which I will negotiate separately and may decide not to trade-in), what's left? I'm pretty sure they'll want to sell me prepaid maintenance and extended warranties, but I only drive 5-6k miles a year and I can get maintenance done anywhere, so those don't interest me.

What else are they going to try and talk me into?

Pretty much the maintenance and warranty stuff...and maybe loan terms, if you are doing that. I pretty much declined everything, although they did have a great loan rate with a local credit union, so I ditched my financing for that. A little confused though, did you NOT negotiate terms ahead of time for the GLC / Trade-in? Usually that happens first...although a "re-negotiation" can always happen at delivery depending on the situation. Oh, and if it sounds too good to be true what they are offering, it usually is, read terms carefully before considering anything. Like I said, I usually just decline all of it, but am open to listening to them. Good luck, nothing to be concerned about with Finance Dept....just check and re-check ALL the numbers.

Thank you, this really helps! To answer your question, no I did not negotiate before ordering, but I told the saleswoman that I was not paying full price of course. Right now all I'm out is a refundable $2500 deposit. I figure if they don't offer me a decent price I take my deposit back and walk, and I don't think that's in anyone's best interest. I actually like that we haven't negotiated, because once they have the inventory on hand they'll want to be sure they move it immediately.

Oh, and I'm not financing, but there's no way I'm telling them that until the last minute.

Wow, ok, guess that can definitely work in your favor once the vehicle is in, like you said. $2500 deposit...yikes, but if you're cool with that and it's refundable, all good. With respect to the financing, be open to financing a little bit, IF they throw more $$$ off at you...sometimes there are incentives for financing that you can't get if paying cash. You can just pay the small loan off within "x" number of whatever (weeks/months/etc).

Yeah, you do bring up a good point. I will listen to them as far as financing goes. I know there's no prepayment penalty in Washington State, so technically I could pay off the whole loan on day 1. Not exactly sure where MB is making any money off of that, but I guess that's not my problem!

They get paid only if the loan satisfies a minimum term. Normally 6 months. So if you take the financing, do them a solid and wait that minimum term before paying it off.

This is not directed at the OP but who discloses they have a trade-in before you get the dealers best and final ? Seems weird that some suggest a dealer would require you to disclose a trade-in before
pre-ordering a car. Seems to me, anyone who tells the dealer they are holding deserves to lose their shirt in the deal. Anyway, best of luck with the new whip.

I'm with you -- I keep my cards close to my vest. In my case, the trade-in I have won't even cover the tax on this vehicle, so it's not going to be a sticking point when it comes to negotiation time. I can easily sell it myself if they low-ball me. So I haven't disclosed that I'll have a trade-in to my dealer, no.

If you live in any area with less than perfect roads, the wheel tire warranty is a good add. I did the key fob as well and lost one, so there’s that. I’ve had some curb rash fixed for free and a couple PDR done as part of the wheel/tire warranty. I think I always come out ahead.

if it’s your daily driver and you care, you can do a wrap on the front end (expel) although it was about 1/2 the price to get it done direct by the guy who they have do it anyway.

I don’t think you want the prepaid maintenance and I have never heard of anyone coming out ahead with one. At best break even and they get to make money on your money for how ever long.

windshield warranty are offered sometimes as part of the wheel tire but ask to make sure they replace with the AMG windshield.

I don’t know how much negotiation can be done on a car you ordered.... but IMO you should get a pre-approval from your bank (USAA has the best rates if you can get them) prior to purchase and if their loan is a higher interest rate....you get the picture. Lastly, if you do what someone in your thread said about taking their financing and paying it off; make sure you see in writing that there’s no early payoff penalty.

11-13% off is standard for a purchase but when I’ve poked around on orders it seems 5-7% is the best I’ve gotten from dealers.

the trade thing is whatever makes sense to you. If you look at KBB it’ll tell you what to expect from a trade or private sale. My philosophy is that if the dealer offers enough to cover the spread when you factor in the tax offset, I do it. When it doesn’t and that’s usually the case I sell it myself.

btw - I bought mine from MB Seattle. Best off luck.

Thanks so much for your reply, this is all extremely helpful! Also good to know you bought from MB Seattle. I originally wanted to order through them but the sales guy ignored me and wouldn't return my voicemails, so I called up MB Bellevue and they were more than happy to take my money (lesson to you salespeople out there - when someone says they're serious about buying, maybe believe them a little bit?).

I will look into the wheel and tire warranty, and ask about the wrap options through the dealer. I wasn't sold on a wrap yet, but if it's truly 1/2 the cost to do it through the dealer then I'd be interested.

Hope you're loving your new ride as much as I hope to love mine!

I just got the car I ordered last week (2020 GLC43) and I picked it up yesterday, they will try to sell you extended warranty (4 years -> 7 years), tire protection, paint protection (like adding a PPF or ceramic coating), maintenance packages (I got a 4-year maintenance as part of the deal), and some other protection stuff. I only cared about maintenance since it makes more sense to pay for that upfront and I'm thinking of doing a PPF later at a local installer. If you usually hit curbs, I would get the tire protection since that will cover any scratches/dents on the wheels.

If you or your wife usually hit curbs...

I hadn’t even refilled the gas tank before my wife curbed the wheels, but I knew that was going to happen so I went with the tire protection I think we will come out ahead on that one, unfortunately! In her defense, I hadn’t yet shown her how to use the 360 cameras.

Hahaha well, I'm still actually trying to get used to the 360 camera, it's more confusing to me to be honest. Anyway, god bless you guys and enjoy your ride

On the camera's I took a picture of the screen, got outside and then put blue painters tape on the 4 corners... got back in and checked to see where it all was... in my case the cameras are pretty darned close...

I use them all the time when pulling in and see there is a parking curb... you can fumble with menus to get the cameras up or just put it in reverse for a second and back to drive.. cameras will stay up till about 5-10mph...
