2021 GLC 43 AMG vs BMW M40i

How do you compare these two?

I have MY20 GLC 300, loving it. Now thinking to replace my 2nd old car. These are two options in my list.

- The gear shifter is very different. It could be hard to switch the habit of changing gear. How do you handle that if have both Mercedes and BMW
- Lot ppl said that BMW M40i is better, but I still like the look of GLC.

Below are Horspower / Torque to RPM Curve for yr 2020. It seems that GLC 43 has higher torque, however, BMW M40i is much earlier get to its peak torque at 1500 rpm

1. GLC 43

2. BMW M40i

I'm going to guess that you're referring to X3 M40i?

if it was me, I'd take the BMW as my other car and have both brands. I've owned a bmw sedan in 2006 and it was a very good driving machine.

I didn't test X3 M40i version when i bought my AMG Coupe because I knew what I wanted. The X4 just didn't look good to me compared with GLC coupe. On the other hand, the X3 looks much better than the GLC version for me.

Both are great cars, like Loc posted its very nice to have variety in your garage so the mix of X3 and GLC could be very nice. As for how they compare they are very close. As someone who has had BMW's for the past 20 years, the X3 is honestly one of their only great products left. Overall the handling is very good and engaging, and the ZF 8 speed is very smooth. Steering is isolated yet is better than most new BMW's. It will drive like a car if you push it, back end loves to hang out for days, and the B58 is a stout motor, really strong and capable, one of the best I6's out there. Interior is very ergonomically laid out, and idrive is the best infotainment system out there, however the seats weren't comfortable for my wife, and the materials are a step down from the GLC, which is ultimately why my wife got her GLC 300 over the X3 30i. Both are very good cars and handle well, I'd give the handling edge to the X3 and it has a much larger trunk, but the GLC is still very impressive and has a roomier back seat and nicer interior overall.

-As for the gear shifter, its no big deal, its like a normal gear shifter, having both in one household won't be weird, you get use to going back and forth.
-Looks are subjective. X3 looks sportier, but GLC looks more luxurious in my opinion, however of the "coupe-ified" versions, the GLC looks better than the X4.

Drive both and see which you like more. What is the car you are replacing? And I'm curious, why two SUV's? Why not get a fun sedan?

Just to throw it out there, when I bought my GLC 43, I had an offer from a BMW dealership in OC, CA, for a X3M for the same price I paid for the 43. I have since moved on to a 63, but if I was to do that purchase over again, I would get the X3M.

X3M, Completion, right? Same price as GLC43.
If same price, I would pick M completion, no brainer 🤩

its definitely doable, BMW is the king of throwing out incentives and leases are super cheap. Not to mention BMW overestimated sales for the X3/4M and there are a ton of leftovers on dealer lots. Only issue I find with the X3M is the harsh ride. We almost replaced our M2C with one but decided it was better to not try and mix an suv and sports car into one vehicle for our needs.

Not a Competition, just an X3M. The Competition would have been a few grand more.

Yeah, that wasn't with much negotiation, so maybe a Competition could be in the same price range, I don't know. I was pretty set on the MB at the time, but the X3M is really fast.

AMG GLC 63s Coupe
I went from a GLE 63s to a X3M40i to a GLC63s all within a 2 year period.

The GLE was an awesome car but I just wanted something a tad bit smaller. The car salesman, that I always use, had just moved from Mercedes to BMW so I thought I would give BMW a chance. I purchased the X3M40i, had it tuned and it was a beast. It ran numbers close to my GLC and it was a fun "around town" car.

The interior was way less refined than the GLC and the cabin noise was unbearable. The seats also killed my butt and lower back. It was the worst road trip car I have ever had. After 3 or 4 months I just couldn't stand it anymore and dumped it for the GLC. a lot of my buddies went from the M40i to the X3M and seem to like it more. That motor is a beast and can tune down into the 10"s in the 1/4 but BMW started remote flagging them. I have heard some of the same complaints on the seats in the X3M and they look very similar. My first tasted with BMW was a poor one but if I ever go full sedan I will look at the M5.

That is very true to have a different brand new car to be joyful. It seems a bit boring to have another GLC for me.

However, it is still concern for me to get used to the gear shifter between cars. My current 2nd car is Honda CRV. I always switch the "gear" in my CRV, but turn out activating windshield wiper. It is embarrassing.

Also, I think I am okay with sedan, but the driver's headroom is too small I always found.

I appreciate the input, we are looking for a new vehicle for my wife and we are considering the X3M40i and GLC 43 AMG. I currently own a 2018 BMW M5 (F90) that I purchased new in 2018. I highly recommend the M5. I was considering a new Porsche 911S coupe before buying the M5. One test drive of the M5 and I was sold. I had a 2015 BMW M3 prior.

What about a CPO Macan GTS? This are pretty cheap now and might be a fun alternative to those two.

There's a little bit of that for me at first when switching cars, but my brain quickly switches gears, pun intended. I do love the steering column gear selector. Very intuitive and natural, but I've driven so many different cars and transmission types that it's not really an issue. When I took delivery of my C63S in Germany last year, I still had my RS5 at home. Drove the C63S for 2 months then dropped it off and jumped straight into a rental with a manual transmission for a couple of days. Not only did I have to shift with the stick in the center console, also had to operate the clutch again with my left foot. Whenever I rent a car in Europe on vacation, I always try to rent one with a manual transmission. Variety is good. While I've owned manual transmission cars for over 15 years, I haven't owned one in the last 7, but the muscle memory is all still there. Then I came home and drove my RS5 for about 2.5 months until the C63S arrived. I still drive my wife's car as well, which has the regular gear selector in the center. Yes, I have to concentrate for a moment at first, but after the first time turning on the wipers my brain makes the switch. I did have to fumble the other day to turn on the wipers in my wife's car. Ended up turning on the blinker at first...haha. All this keeps the brain young!

I think I am convinced to have BMW as 2nd car. It will be more fun to play.

The new M3, M4, look good to me. Hopefully, they will have the new M4 grand coupe soon with the big nose.

I have no doubt that the M5 is one of the best Sedans on the market especially the AWD ones.
