Winter Tires

I live in the San Diego area, so winter tires aren't a must here, but thinking about all-seasons so I can do some mountain trips. Any feedback on the Scorpion Verde or Zero [all-seasons] would be appreciated! When I lived in snow areas previously, I always did the summer/winter swap which works great. But full winter tires here doesn't make much sense...

Have you considered all-weather tires?

Interesting! Will have to research what they make in our size.

I also live in San Diego and faced the same issue last year when I planned a trip to Utah in December .
I have a GLC 43 with 21inch wheel with summer tires .
I went to Discount tire in Solana beach and got 4 Pirelli Scorpio all season tire . (same size as GLC 63)
The ride is much comfortable and the handling is good .
When in Alta and Park City ,we had snow for several days up to 1 ft ,
No issues going up hill or down hill ,great tires .
Good luck

My wife has the Zeros on her XC40 with 21”wheels and the performance is pretty good but haven’t tested in in the winter yet. Road noise is better than P-Zeros since there’s more tread and the wear life of them has been balanced. If I were going with an all season I’d likely choose these or the Michelin PS A/S4. The difference being whichever had the better price.

Thanks! Road noise is better though with the all-seasons? Arguably there's less rubber and more pattern that should create more noise. My tires have always gotten quieter going from winters to summers for that reason.

that’s rarely the case unless you’re running studded winter tires or oversized off-road tires. The softer compound of winter tires usually provides a more cushiony-quiet ride when compared to summers, but tend to wear out quickly in anything over 45 degrees. All seasons provide a medium between the two types and the tread provides some cushion between the cabin and the road. Summers are harsh but the harder compound provides a stickier surface heat.

~ I have the same set up on my glc43 with the 21” rims and love them!

The overly sticky summers tires lasted 13,000 miles and I was excited to locate an all-season tire.

Nothing in an all-season tire was available in the standard glc43 tire sizes. I also had to bump up to the glc63 tire sizes.

I went with the Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires with zero regrets. They are super quiet, crabbing is no longer and they have great reviews.

The Scorpion Zero version is a much better option over the Verde all-season tires with a so so review.

Makes sense! Thanks for the insight.

Do you notice less traction compared to the summers? In other words, what did you sacrifice (if anything)?

~ No downside whatsoever. This is the tire that should have been installed on the suv from the onset. Still handles great!

Thanks! My thoughts as well. Bought my GLC CPO and they just replaced the tires to the summer Pirellis. They said because that's OEM specs. But this is winter and was in Utah!
