GLC 63 DOWNPIPE INSTALL

I want to do downpipe but don't want to pull the tranny. Does anyone know if you remove the turbos can the downpipe come out the top?

Nope, either cut them out, or drop the transmission which is what I did.

shoot it seams like so much work. Can you get the aftermarket downpipe installed with the transmission still in the car?

Yes, because aftermarket pipes are 2 piece. Tbh, it would have taken me longer to cut the OE ones out, safely, than dropping the transmission. They are in there tight af. Transmission was out of the car in less than 3 hours with my 10 year old sons help. Easy job imo.

That is surprisingly quick. Very manageable. I'll order me some. Thank you for the info

I cut mine on both my c63s and my glc63. If you plan on trading the car in down the line then don't cut them

Did you use a shop manual to drop the transmission or just wing it? I have a lift but have never attempted something like this.

I have the WIS, but to be honest, I wasn't initially going to remove the transmission. I thought perhaps I could tilt or lean the engine enough to get the OE pipes out without removing the transmission all together. I was even fearful, as I've pulled engines and transmissions out of cars dozens of times over my life, but never a "9-speed, AWD AMG" transmission. So after maybe 3 hours of messing around with trans mounts etc, I realized no way in hell they are coming out without removing the trans. So as I laid on the floor feeling defeated, I then realized all I had to do was remove the driveshaft, starter, and unbolt the transmission from the block, and it would be out. So I grabbed my 25 year old transmission jack, and within an hour it was off. Once it was out, I then looked at the WIS and yeah, I missed a few steps, or did certain things out of order. So I guess I winged it.

I do not have a lift, never have, and not even sure I would know how to stand up and work on the bottom of a car lol. If it were on a lift, I would have needed one of those expensive fancy transmission lift deals that go up like 6 feet. I do have a Quickjack, but It blocks the sides(see picture), so it went on 4 jack stands for the entire job.

Yeah, had I seen these pictures before, I probably would have thought about another route as well lol. Not really, but definitely glad I did it now, and taught my son a thing or two. Where are you located?
I actually can't wait to pull the engine for intake manifolds, hopefully by the end of summer

I'm in Houston, thankfully there are some good shops here, though I'm tempted to try it myself. The lift I have has a separate rolling jack I could use for the transmission, but man, I worry I'd mess something up worse.

I guess the bigger question is, are you happy with the gains from going downpipes? What tune did you end up going with?

Sold ‘02 SL600 AMG. Looking for a sedan.
OMG! You guys are ballers. Can’t imagine DIY the trans. Ha!

i was looking for down pipes and saw this post. Would love to to hear/see the completed work. I am looking at 2020 Macan Turbo with mods vs 2020 GLC 63S with mods. Kinda liking the GLC thus far.

Hey All, bumping a post here as I’m about to drop the trans in my 2019 GLC 63S Coupe to do downpipe installation without cutting them up…. I have the WIS and the process does seem quite straight forward, however there is one part that concerns me a little and I have scoured the web and can’t find anything to help so wanted to check with those that have done this themselves! Basically, at the point of splitting the trans from the engine, WIS directs to use a long wedge through the lower access hole to ‘pry’ the wet clutch from the flywheel - the special tool indeed is just a long wedge. My question is, does the wet clutch detach freely from the flywheel ( and hence naturally want to stay with the trans) or, if no wedge is used, will it want to remain engaged with the flywheel?I’m hoping the wedge is only needed if alignment is poor, but it’s the only step in the process that I really don’t want to screw up! Any advice greatly appreciated!
