[x253] Complete Air Balance Retrofit Guide

Recently wrapped up an Air Balance retrofit and decided to create a detailed guide for the community (see attachment). Everything's working perfectly now: the fragrance falcon pops out when you open the glove box, the screen alerts you if you remove it, you can adjust all the settings, and you get that nice scent when you start the car. Since I struggled to find good info during my install, especially for wiring and finding the fragrance hole, I figured I'd write up a guide for others taking on this project. I did this on my x290, but it should work the same for w213, w222, and x253 models, so sharing in these sub-forums as well. Enjoy

Nice very precise writeup. I have a couple questions though:
  1. Can you more clearly define what the "fragrance hole" is? Is it a pre-existing hole on all cars referenced by your instructions or something else? A place for a hose to connect?
  2. What do you use to access the coding on the HVAC222 and HU55 modules?

1. Yes, exactly.. more specifically, the fragrance system reserve hole. It's on all w213, w222, x253, and x290 model cars, it's available whether or not the fragrance system was previously installed, the hose of your new fragrance system plugs into it and it allows fragrance to enter your AC system from the fragrance system. It's kind of hard to locate but it's there. If you look at page 17 of the guide, it shows several reference images that should help understand this and find the hole better.
2. You'd need a C5 device with DoIP capabilities and DTS Monaco.. if you're not familiar with those, there are forums out there but it's not very straight-forward.
- It's probably easier and cheaper (definitely much cheaper than a DoIP device) to just pay a sponsor here on the forum to complete the coding steps and give them a copy of the guide (or at least coding steps), especially if you don't plan to code anything else or just don't like doing that stuff. Most sponsors probably know how to enable the air balance and ionizer in DTS Monaco, though I doubt they know how to adjust the scent strength w/o digging around - it's in the guide though (everything is) which will make things easy. They usually have an ODB device they'll send you or some will offer a computer w/the programs installed they can log into remotely whenever you allow them to (more expensive, but much better if you want to code eventually since you'll have everything). But be sure to line up a sponsor who can do the coding before starting on the physical installation if you go the sponsor route.

Many thanks for the reply!

I'll see if there is someone local to me that has this capability already. If I'm crazy enough to jump into coding this myself... is this link correct? It would do the coding for a 2020? The option to preinstall MB Start for car+truck takes it up to $500. Then there is learning this via on the fly.

No prob! Yes that's the same one, I got mine from AliExpress though (this one). A local shop will probably charge several hundred for the programming if they're able to do it. I'm guessing a sponsor here on the forums can do the coding for like 150 or so, including cost of w/e remote ODB they send you. Getting started with DTS Monaco is not for the faint of heart, but it's not rocket science either. It's just hard getting everything working initially, you can buy preconfigured work computers though which already have all the programs on it. If you take that route and want some info lmk, I can post some shops I'm aware of that offer that kind of stuff.

That's a great looking guide!

I have the system factory installed, but I don't believe it's working. Others here have said the hose becomes kinked or loose... If I wanted to check that do I need to remove everything you did in your guide, or is there an easier way to access just the hose?

Thanks!

You can use an endoscope to view if it's properly connected. You'll have to take off the passenger lower footer panel, but that should be it. Then if it is in fact disconnected, you'll need to take out the glove box too.
