Just Picked Up My GLC63S

Picked up my new 2021 black 63S, and she really is a beauty. Exterior looks practically new...no defects that I can find. Only has 22k miles on her. Now I own two GLC's, the other being my white 2023 43 with 8k miles. This has Driver Assistance Package and Burmeister sound, which the 43 does not.

I was on the freeway today in the GLC63S when the car started to judder, like i had a flat or a bunch of cylinders weren't firing. It seemed to lose almost all of it's power, but no all. And the check engine light lit up. I slow downed to 45 mph, but the car was still juddering but not as violently. After about a mile an exit came up. I turned the car off and checked under the hood (as it that would do anything). Turned the car back on and the check engine light didn't come and the juddering stopped. Are problems that correct themselves or are intermittant with no explanation common with these cars?

I was thinking a cylinder deactivation malfunction but I don't think the GLC 63 S had cylinder deactivation only E 63 S?

Could it be a coil, injector issue?

Well, there is no cylinder deactivation, so I know it's not that. Injector or coil makes some sense, but why would that problem correct itself in a few minutes? Maybe an electrical short?

Cause #7 on "Common Problems with M177 Engines" is misfiring and check engine light caused by ignition coil failure. Dollars to doughnuts that is what is wrong. On my way over to pick up the car at Carmax a few days ago, I received an call saying that the car could not be delivered due to a check engine light and misfiring. So, they took it to a Mercedes Benz dealership. I don't know what they did, if anything. Sounds like they need to replace all of coils since it is apparently an intermittent and repeating problem. Car only has 22k miles on it. I guess these GLC63's really are tempermental. Haven't had any problems with my GLC43.

I see, glad you found the issue, where did you get that information from?

Reason why is: a faulty one can sometimes act completely normal other times completely not functional. As long as the coil hasn't completely failed.

Oh I see now, here is a good thread on DIY and fixes yes it is for the W213 E 63 S but at least there are some things that still apply to the C 63 S: https://mbworld.org/forums/w213-amg/...fixes-diy.html

Your coils are cooked. Replace all and will be like new. Unfortunately it's a grand in parts. I did it myself to save $500 in labour. Yours went early. I got 55k miles out of mine.

As many have said it’s a bad coil, my wife’s 2018 new had the same problem dealer replaced zero issues since 2018. She still loved the car about 25k miles now. I think there was a recall on the car for that issue, and it may be covered under recall check with your dealer.

Yes, it certainly seems to be the issue. Since it is intermittent, I imagine it will be hard to diagnose definitively. So I'm thinking they might replace two of eight coils at a time. I hope they don't drag this out over four repair visits.

Yup sounds like it is the coils indeed.
