2020 Mercedes GLE release date - Who's buying one?

Curious, who here is interested in buying a 2020 Mercedes GLE?

I'm considering it.. as well as the EQC for a family vehicle. I know one is an EV and one isn't, but I can see the benefits of both sides. Thoughts?

I'll be ordering a GLE 450. My dealer has always given me the option to order what I want (no deposit) and decide once it arrives. That's after a test drive and after working out the numbers on a trade. Their thinking is if I don't want it, they'll have a fairly loaded GLE to show other customers.

I'm waiting to see how much room is in that 3rd row. I was planning on purchasing a GLS to replace my E wagon, but might get the GLE if the 3rd row is large enough to be actually useful. I don't need the 3rd row all the time but would like to be able to fit a couple of average sized adults or teenagers there on occasion for a trip of 1 to 2 hours.
Pricing and power train/equipment availability is also important to me. The base 2.0 is just too weak for a vehicle of this size. If there is a plugin hybrid to go along with that 2.0 and brings it to 300+hp and I would highly consider it, especially if it's lower priced than an equivalent equipped GLE450.

I agree about the 4-cylinder, which is why for the life of me I can't get why they aren't doing this GLE "350" with the 300hp EQ assisted I4 from the "350" models in Europe. Makes ZERO sense.

My guess is they want to try to keep the MSRP of the base version from creeping up too much over the existing W166 350, so they put a smaller (in theory cheaper) motor in. To keep the lease costs down since there's so many that lease these days and want low payments.

I ordered the wife a 2019 GLE43 on the info that my salesman said the 2019 will have the facelifted dash/interior. Looks like we will be cancelling and ordering a 20.

What makes you think there will be a 450? I'm predicting 4 options:
350
400 Hybrid
53 AMG
63S AMG

the gap between 300 and 53amg is too huge. Ideally, a detuned 400 with 333hp will be a better option to split the two models

For the GLE or the GLS?

That's some good news for sure. Did your dealer provide an electronic copy of the DOG? If so, please post a copy.

Ill let people know when the DOG is up

I think it will follow the E class line now with a GLE350 (granted 300 on the E), GLE450 (many will want a V6 regardless), GLE43/53 variant, and the 63.. IM sure there will be a 550?? plug in variant also.. hopefully with 25-30 mile range (im betting 18)

Dont plan on it, i like the chasis on the current the W166 now and not a fan of the ones that come with a third row as an option

Yes, a GLE560 if there's going to be one!

I am quite interested as my GLS is too big for us, but I really only want the non-AMG V8 if there's going to be one .... GLE560 perhaps?

Is anybody else interested in this model if it's available?

Cheers

I'm pretty sure there will be a 463hp GLS 560 to replace the current GLS550. Question is do they put a model in between the GLS450 and the GLS560? I think a 429hp I6 GLS500 would be a nice midpoint.

GLE560, not GLS560

Thanks Germancar1, but I was referring to the new W167 GLE560 if there's going to be one, not the X167 GLS560.

It's looking doubtful, as the W166 GLE500/550 was discontinued in the US market a few years ago, and then Australia/NZ about 2 years ago now, but they're currently still available in Canada according to their local MB website (and perhaps even China) so it's hard to say what they're going to do with the W167.

My fingers are crossed but I'm not holding my breath.

I am curious as to whether anybody else is interested in this model too though? I've made a few comments about the GLE560 on the other W167 GLE thread and nobody has mentioned a word really, so perhaps there's no market for it anyway.

Oh no there will be no GLE560. The ML550 never sold well and was dropped years ago. Only way to get a V8 is to go the AMG route, GLE63/S. Mercedes couldn't give them away so that is probably where there is no interest in a GLE560 and why there was none in the ML550.

Thanks again Germancar1. Just as I thought.

That is interesting though because during our travels to the USA almost every ML we've seen has been either a ML500 (W163) or ML550 (both W164s & W166s) so there obviously is (or was) a big market in North America for them, even though that model was discontinued in the USA (but not Canada it appears) a few years ago. We haven't been back the USA for about 5 years now though.

And during trips to Europe most of the MLs seen were either 250 or 350 diesels, have never seen one ML500/550, so obviously no or very little market in Europe for them.

There was a small market for them here in Australia though. Maybe 1-2/10 MLs you'd see would be a 500, 2-3/10 a ML63, but most of them are also 250 or 350 diesels.

Pretty silly decision on MB's behalf if you ask me though. Some people, like myself, don't like all the AMG madness, but still like a V8 for towing and driving pleasure. I test drove a GLE63s overnight before I bought the GLS, but it was way too aggressive for what I was after.

I guess I'll be staying in my GLS for a while longer then, even though it's a little too big, but I can't give up that awesome 4.7 litre biturbo V8.

Cheers

Since we haven't heard back from you in several days I'm guessing your dealer never produced a DOG for the 2020 GLE. Which means they probably didn't place an actual order yet.

We'll be looking @ both the GLE and Q8 for my wife next year - although she loves her current ML, she's leaning towards the Q8 based on looks alone.

Which dealership? Our current one was sold new by Mercedes of State College. We got it in Indy with 5000 miles on it.

We'll be ordering a new GLE350 4matic sometime in the summer of 2020. That's when the warranty on our current one runs out. We may have to come to your dealership.

I would think the reason for offering a downsized engine has more to do w/ their CAFE #'s (avg fuel economy across the fleet). By offering a 4 cylinder w/ higher mpg's, it makes room to be able to offer a 63 version as well.

That may be part of it. Audi (Q7) and Volvo (XC90) both offer a 2.0T with roughly 250hp that starts at around $50k. BMW starts the X5 at $60k with a 6 cylinder in the 300hp range, Equivalent Q7/XC90 (3.0T for Q7, T6 for XC90) with 300+ hp all start at the $60k range.
So I would think part of the reason MB is releasing the 2.0T is to keep base price closer to $50k, another part is possibly for CAFE #'s.

What I find strange is when the E class (W213) was released with a 241hp 2.0T as base, it was named E300 vs the W212 with the 3.5V6 302hp as E350. I would've expected the GLE to be the GLE300 instead of GLE350 since the existing GLE350 has 302hp from the V6 and the new one only has 255 from I4. (255hp is a lot closer to 241hp then it is to 302hp).
