Ah didn’t realise that - I just assumed it was a feature of the new style key (maybe I should have read the thread properly!)

Maybe a low battery is the cause, or at least for some cases...

Anyone have access to "Photo KG" referenced here. I opened my FOB last night and cannot find any 4 digit date stamp anywhere. Even dug out the old magnifying glass!

My key definitely goes to sleep without motion.

After I'm shaking it a bit, everything always worked OK so far.

I do try some times to open the car without shaking it but it does not work usually, unless my walking motion already triggered it.

I could not find information in the manual explaining this though.

There is nothing in the manual because it should wake up automatically but isn't sensitive enough.

Your Fob for the 2020 GLE is the new style so there is no reason to look for the date stamp. It could be just a serial or model number anyway.

It isn’t the batteries....batteries should last years although changing them every 18 months is a good idea. Use care taking the Fob apart because it’s got 4 separate pieces plus the buttons can fall out so it isn’t all that easy to put back together if you aren’t watching how it comes apart. Some keys are definitely defective in that they sleep prematurely and don’t wake up with movement as they should. If you looked at my prior posts I commented that Mercedes answer to my dealer....is waiting for a Vendor shipment for a fix.

Hi Bob --
Out of curiosity, I took

GLE 450 Key Fob
the back off of my key fob and took the attached foto. According to the info in your post my fob is dated 9311 (roughly upper left quadrant of the image). Fob dated 2019, 31st week of 2019, first day of 31st week = July 29, 2019.
My 2020 GLE 450 was ordered July 5, 2019 and delivered October 18, 2019.

I’ve just had a look at my key and the model is DM4 with date code 9081.

I can see that the key in the photo is model DM3.

I’m not having any problems myself but I’ve only had the car for 2 weeks so probably too early to tell.

But is anyone having trouble with their DM4 key?

Yes, my fob is apparently a DM3 model. So is the DM4 fob an update/new model or specifically for the UK?? Anyone hazard a guess?

My UK key is DM4 and I collected my car last June, I have occasional issues with the key.

Interesting!

Mine is DM3
Dated: 9450

For anyone interested, it is just a press of the metal button in the back, and pull the cover while pressing. No tools involved, so very easy to check.

I just took my FOB apart again and thanks to Peter's picture I found the info. Not sure how I missed it before. My date code is 9141 an DM3.

Thanks all.

I ordered a new key on 2/21. Per my service advisor, they expect to receive a key at the end of March. Figures crossed I get the new version of the key and it’s corrected from the supplier. And, let’s hope I don’t lose the 1 I have left. 5 weeks and $600 for a spare key is a joke.

Your paying for the key yourself? I've been to two dealers about this and neither claim to know how to solve this. Was there just this week. They put a new battery in which obviously did nothing. Keyless Go is not Keyless when you have to find the key to shake it.

I had lost one of the keys so I had to pay to purchase a spare.

When I originally spoke to the service department guys at my dealership they said they had never heard of the issue were convinced that I was just doing something wrong. I took it in a couple days later and had printed off a bunch of posts from this forum to let them know that others were having the issue. When I picked the car up they said they had called Mercedes and it is a known issue that they were working on but could give no timeline. I'm not counting on the fix during my 3 year lease.

Agree, unless i bought the vehicle.
The car i leased before also had some random problems. I was trying to let MB fix it, after awhile I just give up. not worth time and effort.

Here’s an update....hope it puts an end to the problem:
The new Key Fob is available now-not sure on the numbers so there might be some backorders. New production likely gets preference. My understanding is that your Dealer has to order the replacement since some seem to work OK. Mine are ordered, I’ll report back after trying them for a few days.

Of course my dealer knows nothing of this. They still don't even confirm there is an issue.

I expect to hear something in the next week or so & will let you know. My guy has contacts at Mercedes after years of attending training sessions. There’s always a chance that his communication has been misunderstood but I doubt it. I got the same feedback as you initially from the Service Writer until I made a series of videos showing the repeated process where everything worked (Fob not sleeping) except it won’t lock until you shake it-a high percentage of the time. My take is that the unlocking function goes to sleep prematurely and inconsistently. At times mine requires taking it out of my pocket to vigorously shake it...the pocket shake not enough.

I’m still a little skeptical that it’s only the Fob because it worked well when my car was new and slowly got worse. Two new replacement Fobs provided but no change. Then my MBUX Controller was replaced and my Fobs worked well again for two days. Eight times in a row no issue... and now back to working less than half the time. It’s such a well known issue it’s surprising that there isn’t a TSB but maybe they are waiting for the new Fobs.

As an outside observer, the memo seems accurate as it explains 2 possible causes of "user error" with the new generation FOB. However, just because there are known reasons for why the FOB could go to sleep doesn't mean there also can't be flaws affecting some of you. Your dealer seems to be implying that technical problems aren't possible just because the memo shows 2 ways you can put the FOB to sleep on purpose. In other words, the document could be accurate but incomplete. You can always contact Hanna Wallace since her information is at the bottom left

Absolute nonsense, the wake up sensor on the fob isn't sensitive enough, end of story. There is NO way you can press the lock button twice quickly to put the fob to sleep unintentionally..

Regarding the fob going to sleep if it doesn't move, agree with this but if the key is in your pocket and you turn off the car and get out it HAS moved and should be awake but sometimes it doesn't and if I move the key in my pocket it then works.

This sounds like a mail I received from Land rover when I complained that the seat belt harness marked the back seats when they were put down, they tried to say that customers weren't folding the seats correctly, hard to do wrong when you just pulled a lever in the boot and the seat automatically folded.

We are NOT idiots, please don't treat us as such.

I have this issue, mostly when exiting the vehicle. If the key is in my left hip pocket, it fails when trying to touch lock more often than not. If its in a jacket pocket it pretty much always works. I've tried to accelerate my leg turn a little bit during exit and it helps prevent it. So its definitely an issue, but I'm not going to allow that to spoil my love for my 450. Hopefully it won't get any worse (I've had the car since Sept, almost 10k miles on it)

Agree Tommy, it is a minor issue once you get used to it, would be better if it wasn't there but at the moment insignificant.

Any chance of a video of your leg accelerating, would be good to see
