Is the Speed Limit Assist worth getting?

Hello everyone, really glad to join this forum and I already feel a lot more knowledgable about the GLE from lurking.

I did have a question about the Speed Limit Assist feature. Is this the same as the Traffic Sign Assist feature? Because on the MBUSA site, if you go to the features, both names are listed for the same feature albeit with different definitions. Traffic Sign Assist says it can detect posted speed-limit signs and a "disclaimer" says the Speed Limit Assist says it does not read the signs.

I know in the past in the United States, this feature did not read the signs and solely used the data stored in the navigation maps for the speed limit. So I guess my main question is if that has changed for the 2020 GLE models?

I'm debating whether or not to get the feature as a standalone option (I'm not getting the Driver Assist + package either so it's not something I would use to compliment that).

Thanks in advance!

I do not see speed limit assist as a stand-alone option in the dealer ordering guide... am I wrong?

If you go on the MBUSA website and try to build a GLE, it’s in the safety category as a stand-alone option.

I have it on my Aussie spec one and whilst our speed signs are a bit different to the US which can confuse the system (e.g. on back of large vehicles such as a truck or schoolbus, they have a speed limit sign on them which looks just like a normal sign), I honestly think it's more of a gimmick than anything else. It doesn't add a lot. Sure it's cool to pop up on the dash and HUD what the speed limit is and if there's a temporary limit (I think it gets it from LTE data) such as during roadwork, it's inaccurate a good chunk of the time due to other signage it's detected, and I just feel even if it was accurate, I wouldn't pay extra for it.

Great question..here’s what Mercedes says-
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC® cruise control adapts the vehicle's cruising speedin response to the flow of traffic, while Active Speed Limit Assist detects posted speed-limit signs and automatically adjusts the vehicle's cruising speed accordingly.
On my GLE I have the Driver Assist and it reads the speed limit signs very well but it’s not perfect. For example, it read an 80 as a 60 so that might be an abrupt and unwanted “Assist” as you slowed dramatically in traffic. I thought mine was supposed to adjust to the speed limit but it doesn’t do that. I can set any speed like with any other Cruise Control. That could change with an update to the system.
I wonder if it even works now? You get Traffic Signs a feature I like and the way they are displayed is very useful. My only question is do you really want your car to adjust to speed limit signs even if it works now. In my experience it’s safer to drive the speed of other traffic and that is normally 5 over the posted.

Works on my car but I have turned the auto speed limit off. Shows correct speed limit 99% of time and is useful on roads that you are not sure what the speed limit is.

I find google maps speed limit data to be more accurate. The mercedes system sometimes misses signs and is not updated.

I have referenced the mercedes dashboard speed limit a few times regardless of these factors. I do not use the auto speed limit feature. Only you can decide if it's worth the $295.

I can’t use the adaptive cruise because it’ll slow the car down by 20 mph when the speed limit only changes by 5. Really need to figure out a way to turn it off, but I am beginning to worry that it can’t be turned off...

I posted how to shut off the speed limit assist on another thread, maybe the random thoughts one. Do a search of my posts and you should find it. I can’t quite remember how to do it without looking at the screen.

The adaptive cruise should keep you a safe distance behind a vehicle in front of you, but shouldn’t slow you down if the road ahead is clear.

I have the Traffic Sign Assist as a separate option- also did not get the Driver Assist Package. Just drive the 450 from NYC to Southwest Florida and found it to be useful especially in light of the relatively modest cost of $295. It works pretty well and helps keep my need for speed in check as it sort of is a good reminder flashing at you as you exceed the limit......

I currently have the speed control turned on. My beef is that it Aggressively responds to the increasing and decreasing speed limits, It does not recognize “Reduced speed ahead” signs which human drivers use to allow the vehicle speed to drift down rather than applying the brakes when the lower speed limit area is reached. On the acceleration side, say from 50mph to 65mph the system will pull hard enough to drop two gears pull away from adjoining traffic. I normally drive in curve mode, so I intend to try the system in eco mode to see if responds differently.

I turned mine off too. Around here, especially on the interstates if you drive the published speed limit you get run over.
