This question may be asked and answered already somewhere but does anybody know why the front camera is activated sometimes when I slow down and stop on the red light? I don’t know what value it adds by showing me the front camera on the screen when I can see it through front windshield. Anybody?
Your findings may be applicable to countries where traffic lights are hanging in the center of the junction or on the opposite end of the junction, but there are other countries (e.g. Spain and most of Europe, if I recall correctly) where the traffic light is located on poles erected at the stop line of the junction. This entails that sometimes, if you are standing in the first line you may not be able to see the traffic light.
In the picture below you can see that if you are standing first in line on the left line and there is a truck obstructing view of the lower traffic light you would probably not be able to see the traffic light above.
When I test drove I notice it helped also on many US intersections as well, it is often the case here that you can't see the traffic light if you are first in line, you would have to lean forward... I find it valuable.
I can enable/disable this on my A class. Should see if it's an option on the GLE if you don't like it. I tried it for a while but it never seemed to do anything truly worthwhile (I'm in the US so perhaps I'm lucky with respect to spot light placement). The key negative was if I had navigation on, it'd switch to camera view and hide the map. Sitting at a stop light and re-checking my position on the map is a habit of mine so it was better to disable this.

If I recall correctly, it was toggleable in the test GLE I drove.
I thought this only came on with Augmented Nav package? I have the augmented nav pack on my car and when Nav is on and I get close to the next street turn, the camera will enable with augmented on screen instructions
It'd be cool if I could enable the camera to turn on whenever I wanted it to though.
I think it's part of that package but this is specifically a traffic light feature. It turns the front camera on if you're stopped at a stop light (and first in line). The augmented street turns are a separate feature (I like that one.)
