GLE 450 gearbox downshift issues

Hi! I want to create a new thread about downshift issues in GLE 450 (2020).
I have bought a new car from my dealer in Ukraine and from the first day I have issues with gearbox downshift.
For example, when I press a break almost every time my car has downshift kicks on (4-3-2 gear).

And I also hear some noise in my gearbox during downshift on 3-2-1

Please let me know if you have the same problem and how to solve it if you already did it.

P.S. I have visited my car dealer but he could not solve the problem, first of all they reset gearbox software but it did not help me.

Porsche PDK transmissions do that - especially in Sport mode. Does the new GLE allow you to change performance modes? If so, try the Comfort or ECO mode.

Some people on this forum mentioned that this problem take place on GLE 450 because of EQ Boost. But I do not think that this is normal for this car with its price

No problem on mind certainly NOT smoother in sport in comparison to comfort.

It should not "kick" in very hard when the transmission is down shifting. If anything its a nudge/a little jolt and what the transmission is doing is Rev Matching (a good thing) during the downshift.

If its "bucking" like a newbie driving a stick shift then I would agree there is an issue.

I do not have this issue, but sometimes i can fell the car kick a little harder than usual (during braking), but i actually think when that happens the "safety brake" feature is active cause I am late braking.

The problem is in exhaust pressure sensor. After I changed it to new one, I have solved the same problem in my gle 450

Has anyone else had any luck having the sensor replaced to resolve the intermittent harsh downshifting problem? Aside from Igor?

Also, Igor, how did you learn about that sensor needing to be replaced?

Hi. I found the sensor error when I visited my dealer.
Now my gearbox works better, but is so far away from ideal work condition

Privet. What other issue are you facing? Yesterday I had a hiccup when I was in 2nd and had to accelerate fast, it took forever. I floored it, it was like 3-4 seconds before everything kicked in...

I have a 2018 gle43 which has the same 9 speed transmission I believe. The transmission kicks all the time when downshifting and MB will always say it’s normal every time. When I test drove a GLS 450, I did not notice downshifts at all, and I was looking for them. Good luck!!!

I think we need to wait for the next gearbox/engine update. I think it was not a good idea to buy this car now, we had to wait for 2-3 years

I can confirm that I had no gearbox issues on new GLE 53 when I have tested it last week, the same engine as mine

I have absolutely no rough downshifting or lag on my early (4/19) GLE 450.

I have the exact same issue with my 2020 GLE 450 4MATIC. Any update or fix on yours?

My GLE 53 has a very rough 2-1 downshift in Sport.

Also, 3-4 and sometimes 4-5 is rougher than normal.

Not yet. This or next week I will visit my dealer with this question again. They said that we need to change another part of my gearbox. I asked them to change the whole gearbox for a new one. I will inform you when my problem will be solved. But I have to say that I drove my car almost 12000 km and now I have less gearbox issues. I am very disappointed with the issue in the new car with the price almost 100k$

Hi Igor, I got my 2020 GLE 450 last Nov. I have the same gearbox issue you have.
When downshifting from 4,3, and 2, the kick is very obvious. But this only happens when the engine is fully warmed up, not when it’s cold.
I have sent my SUV to dealer 3 times for this issue. The dealer had a technician test drive it with me.
The tech felt the kick, but unfortunately, it wasn’t as severe as it normally is since the test drive route and route that I drive is totally different.
So, the tech said it is okay. But I know it is not okay, this 9 speed new model is supposed to be more smooth than 7 speed.
How did your dealer find the issue which is caused by the "Exhaust Pressure Sensor"? I will let my dealer knows your solution and have them attempt to fix the issue.
It's really bothering me and it makes me afraid to apply the break in front of traffic light each time. Thanks for your post!

Hi! I did not fully solve the issue. But when I replaced the sensor it becomes better. Dealer found the issue with the sensor during last diagnostic. They can not replace this sensor without errors. I tired to solve the problem and I want to change the car.

Has anyone found a solution to the rough downshifting challenges? I continue to experience this frustration. Although intermittent, it bothers me enough to be pissed off for the rest of my drive. Given the infrequency of the rough downshift, it has been difficult for the maintenance department to detect the issue when I have taken it to the dealership to have them check it out.

I’ve seen some pretty jolting 4-3 and 3-2 shifts when slowing down. Not enough to bother me but it would be nice if it was smoother. My passengers sometimes tell me I’m being a little too heavy on the brakes when in reality, it’s the transmission shifting down.

Still having the same issue. I live in Kuwait, a middle eastern country. I have contacted my local dealer regarding this issue. They raised the issue to the headquarter in Germany. However, they replied to my local dealer that they have not faced this issue before, and it is not widespread enough to warrant an investigation or anything of this sort. I think this is ridiculous.

My GLE 2020 has the same issue

I believe the Driver Assistance Package.A software error in the radar sensor control unit may impair the functionality of the Active Brake Assist.

An impaired Active Brake Assist may not automatically apply partial or full braking as expected, increasing the risk of a crash.

That why the car Jerking during down shift and I will tell the MB delear about this recall was activated sep 2019
