Cheaply made rear license plate bracket

Has anyone had any problem installing their license plate with a frame? The factory bracket comes with bolts that are so short that anything thicker than the plate won’t fit.

Also, instead of the all-metal bracket like I had on my ‘15 ML, there is a plastic bracket with metal nuts held in place by a thin plastic bracket that broke loose when I tried to use longer screws. I finally pulled the nuts out and drilled the holes bigger so I could snap in the standard plastic license plate anchor brackets found on many cars (and in most auto parts stores). They worked perfectly with the longer screws I needed to attach a WeatherTech stainless steel billet frame.

I was shocked to see such a cheaply made and poorly engineered part on a German luxury car!

At least most of us in the U.S. aren’t required to have front plates to spoil the view!

Front license plate requirement

Not a true statement. Only 19 of 50 states do not require a front plate. Not sure if the population count but considering CA does, I think the majority of drivers need them.

Okay, Most of us in the Southern U.S. aren’t required to have ugly front license plates.

This purchase solved that problem for me

I bought this item from eBay, low cost but extremely happy with its quality and appearance.
The item came with 2 Black Finish Stainless Steel Frames + 8 Black Plastic Screw Caps + 8 Nylon Screws.
Search (eBay or Google) for 2PCS-SLIM-BLACK-STAINLESS-STEEL-LICENSE-PLATE-FRAME-SCREW-CAP-SLIM-4-HOLE-BF
It costs me only $7.95, purchased from blvd-la

Those are nice looking, however, the longer screws will break the flimsy plastic brackets that hold the metal nuts in place.

Cheaply made rear license plate bracket

Fortunately, this item fits our 2020 GLE front and back license plates perfectly without any modifications whatsoever.

So, the metal nut attached to the black plastic frame, came off. Looks like the metal nuts were affixed to some sort of plastic bracket on the back of the factory plastic black license plate frame. Actually, the top two came off from the black plastic frame.

My license plate is on, but only attached via the bottom two screws since those were fine. Is there a fix to this or just take it to the dealership? Definitely would feel more comfortable with the license plate secured by all four screws.

I took the bracket off and removed the metal nuts and broke off the plastic tabs holding them in place.

I then used a drill with a rasp bit attachment (https://www.homedepot.com/p/eazypowe...-202889744-_-N) and rounded out the holes large enough to snap in the standard square white plastic license plate screw holders that you can buy in any auto parts store.

https://www.autozone.com/license-pla...ers/551590_0_0

Worked like a charm!

mercedes GLA 250
Hello, I bought a 2021 Mercedes GLA 250 recently and the same thing happened to me. As I was screwing in the license plate, one metal nut in the plastic bracket fell off. I want to remove the whole bracket and glue the metal bracket back on. The bracket is screwed on with four Trox ( star hex?) screws. Does anybody know what size screws they are and what tool should I get? ( or should i go to the dealer better?)
Thank you in advance for your help,

The emphasis on lightweight cars might be a factor with the plate holder and several other parts. My GLE 53 weighs just a little over 4K, a lot lighter than many comparable’s.
I haven’t had any trouble with my plates probably because my SA made a point to tell me about over tightening the screws. They supplied 4 screws long enough to accept the plate and my clear cover with a few threads to spare. I agree it’s not the right place to cut corners because it’s only a matter of time...

Did you mean 5K? According the MBUSA the GLE 53 curb weight is 5,236 lb. (and that's likely without the big brakes). Hardly a lightweight.

Same thing happened to me when I tried to take off the rear temp plate... one of the screws stripped out of the plastic housing and it was a tough to get something up in there to hold it still (without scratching the car... Also it did scratch the paint down to the metal (under where the plate goes),.. spinning around and around - I probably need to touch that up one day... I went back to Mercedes to get a new one of these mounting plates and they gave me one and installed it no problem... Oh, and because they have a nice "Mercedes Austin" thick chrome plate frame (they want you to advertise), they automatically switch out to the longer length hex screws that fit perfectly. I would think Mercedes knows what the longer bolts you need are....

I just went to the local hardware store with my too short screws, matched the size and galvanized coating, got some longer ones and came home. They're metric.
Pricey - I think they were 55 cents apiece.

No, it was so new that I was just changing the temp plate to the real plate when it happened so they seemed happy to go get and put on another one. No issues...
