Cheaply made rear license plate bracket

Also, instead of the all-metal bracket like I had on my ‘15 ML, there is a plastic bracket with metal nuts held in place by a thin plastic bracket that broke loose when I tried to use longer screws. I finally pulled the nuts out and drilled the holes bigger so I could snap in the standard plastic license plate anchor brackets found on many cars (and in most auto parts stores). They worked perfectly with the longer screws I needed to attach a WeatherTech stainless steel billet frame.
I was shocked to see such a cheaply made and poorly engineered part on a German luxury car!

My license plate is on, but only attached via the bottom two screws since those were fine. Is there a fix to this or just take it to the dealership? Definitely would feel more comfortable with the license plate secured by all four screws.

I then used a drill with a rasp bit attachment (https://www.homedepot.com/p/eazypowe...-202889744-_-N) and rounded out the holes large enough to snap in the standard square white plastic license plate screw holders that you can buy in any auto parts store.

Worked like a charm!

Thank you in advance for your help,

I haven’t had any trouble with my plates probably because my SA made a point to tell me about over tightening the screws. They supplied 4 screws long enough to accept the plate and my clear cover with a few threads to spare. I agree it’s not the right place to cut corners because it’s only a matter of time...

Pricey - I think they were 55 cents apiece.
