Edumacate me - Dealer says he can't get an "Allocation"?

So I'm working with a dealer. Smaller Merc dealer in a small town. Agreed on a price on a GLE450. He says he's got the build in the computer but he can't order it until he gets an allocation. He says Mercedes is holding these up and there are no allocations available.

Does that just mean HE'S not getting any because he's smaller? Or are all of them held up?

Hard to say what he means, but each dealer does get a limited number of allocations for each vehicle type. Obviously larger dealers get more. There may be other performance factors that weigh into this. Shop around and you will find one, but you may have to go further away.

A gaggle of MB's
Just so you know - all production orders thru end-December with the factory are "locked down" meaning no changes.

So based on what you are "planning to build" - you're only hope for delivery this year would be for your dealer to find closest comparable GLS450 that is scheduled by a dealer in his region - that is not sold to a customer - and trade that dealer a unsold rig your dealer has coming in - a "swap" so to speak.

Production orders for 1st decade January have been "allocated" - and those orders are changeable - from what your dealer has to say he doesn't have 1st decade Jan allocation - with your order in the pipe - he "might" get a 2nd decade Jan allocation to fill your order.

That's my best assessment for tonight..

The dealer said we would not get our GLE until January at the earliest. So that jives with what you're saying. Not interested in "getting close" so we're okay with waiting as long as we have confirmation that we're in the queue.

By "decade" do you mean first half of January?

Thanks, I scanned through the tail end of that thread. It basically deals with delays of cars that are already ordered. I'd be happy just getting in the official queue.

My question is primarily about the allocation process, and if I would be better off finding a bigger dealer?

Thanks for all the help so far

So where do you live? So are there more dealers around the area? So is there another town or city nearby? So I guess if you could give some more details SO we could help better. So that would be great. So what do you think? So wanna try ?

Allocations can’t easily be explained specifically. It’s supply vs demand and other factors such as prior sales volume. Some Dealers have more sold orders in the pipeline than others. Your dealer has the best idea of when they will get the next allocation. If they can’t give you a good estimate it might mean it won’t be soon.

Indianapolis. There is only one dealer here. They pretty much said MSRP take it or leave it.

I'm talking to Ft. Wayne. I asked for 7% (and $199) off MSRP and they agreed. But I suppose it is easy to agree when you can't order one.

If there are others in the five state area that would do as well that can actually order one, I'd talk to them.

Decade is 10 days. Builds are scheduled for first, second or third decade of each month. Until you have an allocated build slot, you have nothing. Dealers can trade allocations. Small dealers don't have much to trade for. Larger ones are usually part of a chain, like Autonation, and trade allocations across their corporation. That's why a larger dealer is a better bet.
