Looking for advice on new wheels

Hi,

I am looking for some new wheels for winter and a bit of off roading (nothing too serious) - I'm hoping that someone who knows what they're talking about can offer some advice.

I have a GLE 350d AMG line and the OEM wheels are:

Front: 285/40/22 10Jx22 ET56.1
Rear: 325/35/22 11Jx22 ET50

I was originally looking at these wheels as they're fairly cheap: https://www.kunzmann.de/shop/en/tire...cedes-benz.htm

However, I was advised that because I have option P31 AMG Line Exterior, they may not be suitable and was offered these instead that are a fair bit more expensive: https://www.kunzmann.de/shop/en/tire...high-sheen.htm

After comparing the wheel sizes and off-sets, the cheaper ones don't appear to be too much different to the more expensive ones suggested.

Can anyone offer any advice on this?

Thanks in advance!

The issue with your option package (AMG exterior) is that it includes the sport brakes which include larger rotors and thus the minimum wheel size required to clear these rotors is a 20" wheel.
The 19" MB wheels won't clear the larger rotors.

Might want to look on ebay or similar as they regularly have some options.

Thanks for your reply - I understand that the 19” won’t fit due to the rotors but the wheels on my original post are both 20”

I’ve compared them both on a wheel and tyre size calculator/comparison website and can’t see much difference between them.

I’m looking to see if anyone knows why the first ones aren’t suitable for cars with the P31 option.

It could be that the wheel structure still doesn’t clear the brakes....not likely. Or maybe the are just pointing out the different offset. In the US we have a reliable company (TireRack) that provides good fitment advice and great pricing. The 8 1/2” wheel is narrower than the 9” that came on my GLE with AMG Pkg. You have some different wheels in the U.K. but even those seem pricey. I got a second set for under $1200 delivered with lug bolts & tax of 6%. Paid another $20 for center caps. The offset is off slightly from stock but not noticeable. Here’s a link and Pic.

The only explanation I could think of is the thickness of the spokes and whether they give you enough clearance from the face of the caliper. However my guess is they will both fit. But not sure I would risk it unless someone has already tried it.

The AMG version has the advantage of black barrels so will stay cleaner looking longer.

As I mentioned mine came with 9”-et 57 Fr; et 44 Rear. The 21” AMG comes with 10” & 11” wheels so there has to be some wiggle room on the brakes. Here’s a pic of mine wearing winter tires and the front where I’m about a 1/4” wider. Still narrower than the 21’s with a 10” wheel.

Thanks for that info!

Just to clarify:

Yours came with 20” from factory with 9” ET57 front and 9” ET44 rear

Those 20” you got from tirerack are 8.5” ET45 all round?

It’s a shame they don’t ship to the U.K.!

Yes to both questions. The wheel isn’t exclusive to Tire Rack & is probably made in China so there should be other vendors. I actually found these after a lengthy search for higher et wheels. A year ago there was very little info on fitment.

👍🏻

I can’t see there being a problem with the rear wheels as the ones I’m looking at are almost identical to the ones you have.

The offset of the fronts I’m looking at mean the wheel will be a little closer to the caliper than yours - how much clearance do you have left?

I suppose it will also depend on the thickness of the spokes as mentioned above.

I will have a look round to see if I can find alternatives too.

Thanks!

I have factory wheels on for summer. There seemed to be as much clearance but didn’t measure.

I keep forgetting one important thing. The prior Gen Mercedes had 14mm lug bolts....the new one has 15mm. You may have to drill out the bolt holes on the wheels but can probably use your same cone shaped lug bolts from the GLE V167. Most AM wheels have conical seats and will take shorter bolts. The Conical 15mm are available now But might have to be purchased separately. Here’s a comparison showing lengths and shape.

Ok thanks for your advice, much appreciated!

I have emailed Tirerack and they do actually ship to the U.K. - just waiting for them to email me back a quote of the shipping costs.

I am sure they will be able to advise on the bolts.
