GLE 2021
21" vs 20's

I am ordering a 2021 GLE 450 and debating on the 21" or 20" wheels. I live in Northern New Jersey and potholes do exist. I was going to get the 21" cause they look better, but don't want to regret it with a harsher ride and flats all the time. Either one, I will likely get them dusted/painted black. Thoughts?

The 21s have the same sidewall height as 20s on the previous W166 and feel plenty plush to me with Airmatic or E-ABC. I don't have a lot of pothole experience around here, but I don't think the 21s will be too fragile.

The 315s in the rear are too fat. Wife is hitting curbs at a ridiculous rate. Also, the tires are too fat for some car wash tracks.

I'd get the 20's if I had it to do over again.

.
Hogwash . This is my wife’s DD and she hasn’t curbed yet in 18 months. And, just say no to automated washes (I know that’s not an option for everyone).

Another necessity here in North Jersey is tire and wheel coverage. One good NJ pothole can take out a couple of wheels. And compare out the door prices between NJ and going across state line to NY. The NY $75 doc fee is a lot cheaper than $599 or more some NJ dealers add. Personally, I found the deals better in NY state than North Jersey plus the fee savings. Of course, your mileage may vary.

I really wanted the 21s when I was buying my GLE but the right car had 20s on it. Now months later, I love the 20" AMG Twin-spoke wheels. Would get them again given the choice. Great ride and they look great with the night package. See link below in my signature.

So is that carwash really a problem with the 21's? I prefer the low profile look of the 21's. but don't want to deal with flats, hand washing ect. I assume the ride won't be much different of Benz wouldn't sell them right? Thanks for all the feedback btw...I truly torn...

Only MBs - the best or nothing
While 21" tires for V167 are lower profile that 20", at almost full 5" sidewall they are not low profile. By comparison, W166's 295/35-21 at 4" sidewall is low profile for SUV. 21" V167 wheels/tires will look better, handle better (both due to relatively shorter sidewall and wider rear track) and provide almost as good ride (except off-roading) compared to 20".
