2021 GLE 450:Airmatic/Adaptive Damping System

Hi, I'm new to MBWorld. I'm about to place an order for a 2021 GLE450 and am on the fence about the Airmatic/Adaptive Damping System option. I've driven both on smooth pavement and didn't notice a marked difference. But, the option of being able to raise the body a few inches when I drive in deep snow sounds appealing. I don't really drive much anymore unless I'm driving from central California to go skiing in the western states (Oregon, Washington, Utah, Montana) and the occasional road trip to Canada. I've read that this package improves the ride in Sport/Off-road mode but wonder if the potential for system failure down the road (and the associated astronomical repair bill) makes it worth it. Someone mentioned that it's more prone to problems/early failure if the vehicle isn't used often and the last thing I want is to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with it snowing like hell. I tend to keep my cars for a long time. Any insight ?

MO is that Airmatic is worth it for the reasons you mentioned. And going from Comfort to Sport mode should be a marked difference in ride and handling, and there is load leveling. Sure it is a more complex system that can have failures; I have kept my MLs with Airmatic 7 years each and never had a non-warranty failure. Get an extended warranty if you are worried.

Thanks GregW for the quick reply. The extended warranty option did cross my mind. Any in particular you'd suggest looking at ?

The Mercedes New Vehicle Extended Limited Warranty. I suggest contacting Jeff Jackson JJackson@MBLouisville.com for a good price. Got mine ~30% off list. Some dealers mark them up.

Winter tires will make more difference than being able go raise the car. If snow gets that deep, unplowed, they will close the road. I find the air is handy for other reasons...seems like it belongs on a luxury car.

Thanks Greg -- Jeff hooked us up with the 7 / 100k extended warranty (so +3 years +50k miles, if I got that right).

The terms of the warranty are generally solid but interestingly enough, they exclude Lithium Ion batteries. I am not sure if that only meant true hybrids (usually have a much longer warranty from factory to cover the battery) or if it means the "mild hybrid" battery that's on the 450's and 580's systems. Check out the wording:

6.14. ELECTRIC-DRIVE VEHICLES: Maintenance, service, and
replacements of/to the Vehicle’s lithium ion battery are not covered by
this Agreement.

Why don't you ask him that question and let us know?

Jeff's words: "To my knowledge, the agreement does not cover batteries at all- hybrid or non-hybrid. They are covered by the factory warranty." A quick look at the factory warranty terms shows only plug-in hybrid's battery has the benefit of a longer term (6 year 62k miles).

So we assume the mild hybrid batteries are 4 years, I guess. Last I checked the smaller 90 Ah (LiFePO4) one in my M4 was like $1,300. That one in my BMW is approaching 7 years old and seems just fine, and I use the start/stop system.
