What we are currently worried about is if Mercedes fixed the M274 piston cracking issue on the newer M264 which you are considering. Until then it is hard to gauge the reliability of a M264 engine with no hybrid system compared to a M256 with the 48V hybrid system.
That being said, I really hope that no one that currently has a GLE 350 or is a future owner has to deal with this piston cracking or currently has a GLE 450 or is a future owner deal with this annoying 48V battery issue.

I actually turned off the start/stop after stopping at 3 intersections. It just made it feel awkward. One thing that I will have to live with if I get the i6 is a potential dead truck and tow to the service center for battery replacement. I will be keeping the truck for +7 years so I guess I should start putting $3 on a piggy bank to save for that eventful moment.

I'm in a dilemma right now which one to get. 4 or 6. Tested the 4 and it is surprisingly good but it just makes noise and not sure how it will pull with a full load. The vehicle I am looking at with a 6 is a brand new 2021 (last batch that just got delivered 1 week ago) vs a 2022 4 banger with more options. Hard to decide actually as I have not tested the 6 yet (maybe on Monday). If i get the 2021 it is $3100 less than the 2022 i6 (price went up for 2022) so it is a very tempting car but without the tech pack and small 20" wheels (it has a sport pack).

One more thing to be aware of is with the 3rd row option, since the spare is deleted, you get run flats in the 20" size and a TireFit kit with the 21s. I take it you live in Canada (add to your profile)? If you need Winter tires the 20" wheels would be good to that if you upgrade to 21s later.

In Europe, the facelift E-Class sedan/coupe/convertible gets both E 300 and E 350 so you can choose to have either mild-hybrid or just ICE only. Facelift E-Class sedan/coupe/convertibe in North America unfortunately only gets E 350 but then at least it isn't mild-hybrid. Really not sure what MBUSA will decide to bring over this time for the GLE.
The mystery remains, I don't understand why MB decides to put a new M254 in the W206 C-Class when they only first introduced the M264 on a 2019 C 300 and GLE 350 for North America, so still fairly new engine. From my understanding, MB's decision to share engines between C-Class and E-Class is not uncommon. The pre-facelift E-Class sedan/coupe/convertible with the E 300 had the same M274 as the pre-facelift C 300 for example.

To clarify, I meant only E 350 as in 4-banger version in North America, I am aware of the existence of the E 450, E 53, E 63s... Sorry about the confusion.

Was the M256 in E53 for facelift W213 a big change?
How does the M256/E53 in W213 facelift compare with a potential M254 (4-banger with EQ Boost) in V167 facelift?
Or how does M17x in W222 facelift compare with potential M254 in V167 facelift?

Removed. Sorry, didn't notice the question specifically asks between facelift and pre-facelift E 53.

if you drive in eco mode, the vehicle starts from a stop in second gear vice first, and the start stop feature is less abrupt. Not as smooth as the 450, but better. Also, I have 20000 miles on mine now and the start stop feature has smoothed out in comfort too. I always drive under my profile, and my wife drives under hers, that helps too because the system learns your style -- how hard/fast you hit the accelerator. Also, I like to drive with the HUD, and she drives with the HUD off. Using the profiles remembers your settings: radio settings (equalizer settings and presets), seat memory settings, climate settings, color of interior lights, mirrors, etc.

How much different would it be, based on the W213 precedent, for MB to introduce the M254 four banger with 48V EQ Boost powertrain on the 167 facelift?
Another example for reference is the M17x powertrain introduction into the late W222 refresh.
