Placed My 2022 Order Today, Did I Make the Right Tire Choice?

I placed my order/deposit today for a 2022 GLE 350 AWD to be built in September with delivery sometime in October. (FYI, I was told that MB will continue building 2021s through August and will start building 2022s in September, but orders can be placed now.) I had planned to go with standard 19-inch tires but decided to go with 21-inch tires after seeing them on a GLE 350 in person today. I'm starting to second guess that decision since I'm concerned the 21" tires will be much more prone to damage from potholes and curbs and may make for a firmer/bumpier ride. Appreciate your thoughts--is it best to stay with the standard 19"? Do you have 20 or 21-inch tires--and if so, how do you like them? Thanks for your input and for sharing any experience you have with this.
P.S. I read all the "tire size" forums I could find here at MB World but didn't find a lot of information about real-life experience with the various tire sizes.

I have 21” AS tires on my GLE. They are regular non low profile. The ride is very smooth and not being low profile, should not cause you any problems with pot holes. . My CLS has low profile run flats performance tires. They are terrible riding and offer little protection against potholes. I have bent three rims, blown one tire and cracked one rim. Now you know why I ordered the 21” AS non run flat for the GLE. You won’t regret your choice.

we have the 21s, have had the car for 2 years and really no compliant on the ride quality at all. we just did 2000 mile back and forth trip to yellowstone and the ride was very smooth

for sure 19s will give you more cushion and softer ride, but i honestly think the car looks weird with such small wheels

You will need at least twenties, for the car to handle okay.
One difference will be the cost of replacement tires, so you might investigate that.

Did they give you a discount on your 580?

I got the 20's on my 53AMG and then bought the black matte wheels like the 22's and the car looks great and I like the ride. As mentioned above, the cost of new tires goes way up as the numbers get bigger.

I have the 21” multi-spoke rims with AS tires. I just came from an E300 with 19” low profile run flats. The ride in that was really not good. They looked good but the car shook and shuddered over every bump. The 21” non-run flat tires on the GLE are SO much better. I’m pleased—they look good and ride well. Hope that puts you at ease some.

The 19s are way undersized (O.D.) compared to the other choices. I think you will be happy with the 21s.

I totally agree with Greg, who I think posted a comparison of the overall diameter in another post (if I recall, the tires that come with the 19" wheel have an overall diameter that is more than an inch smaller than any other tire size). I wouldn't go smaller than 20" on the GLE.

When we took delivery of wife's 580, the bay next to us had a customer taking delivery of a 350 with 19" wheels. It was almost comical how undersized the tires appeared. And I don't mean the tires were high profile, I mean, the actual space occupied by the tires in the wheel well was noticeably undersized compared to any other size (20, 21, 22"), both height and width.

I just got to 1,600 miles on my GLE 450 with the 21” multispoke and soso scorpion tires and I have to say I am very happy here in the land of potholes and expansion joints in NYC. I was really worried but didn’t have the option as I lucked out with a dealer stock 450 with no wait and had originally planned on 20’s. Is it a bit rougher , maybe but it looks great, handles really nicely and out out of massive precaution my friend suggested I pick up the wheel insurance which I did. Ride wise I haven’t had extensive time on the 20’s but aside from winter which I haven’t experienced yet I’m totally happy. I wouldn’t worry at all.

I went with 20’s simply because I like to rotate my tires. As far as I know, that is not an option with 21s as they are a diff size front vs back.

You might want to check your wheel offsets. They can’t be rotated front to back without removing the tires and remounting. The front wheel is et57 and the rear et44. That’s a little over a 1/2” so you will be 1/2” wider in front & 1/2” narrower in the rear if you just swap wheels front to back & back to front.
