Augmented Reality

How good is this option? I found out that the plant is not building cars with this option anymore due to chip shortage, just curious how owners like it.

I like it a lot; it will show house numbers on the actual houses, it provides arrows at the actual street to turn which is helpful at cplicated intersections.

Hopefully it's not holding up production as mine is in production right now, as of 6/25. Waiting to hear from my sales advisor if it's completed yet or not.

Apparently augmented reality and airmatic are both constraints right now

I ordered my GLE without it because when I had loaner GLEs that had that option I felt it wasn't a necessity and I felt like it wouldnt work that often. The only reason why I would order it in the future is because the only way to get the full screen navigation map on the dash is if you have the augmented reality option. Right now the map space in the dash is a tiny square and it cannot go full screen.

I have augmented reality and the HUD. I use the HUD all the time, rarely use augmented reality. If I had to choose between the two, I'd go with the HUD. Now if they offered augmented reality in the HUD....

Hang on… thats new info. So I cant have the full screen view on the dash without the augmented reality? Even with the regular navigation? Thats not good

Went to the dealer and sat in two cars, one with augmented reality and one without and yes the full screen is only available in augmented reality.

My bet is the chip shortage really impacts the dashboard screen much more than augmented reality itself. I think this is more of a chip shortage -> no full screen and as a result no augmented reality rather than the other way around.

I have a GLE53 on order that goes to production on 7/23 and just found out my augmented reality option got removed by the factory because of the chip shortage. Everything else seems to be locked and loaded (I chose virtually every option). Disappointing, but not end of world. Praying nothing else gets removed by the factory as there are certainly some options that if removed would be a deal breaker.

I am going back and forth on what to do but on a car like this, the major selling point is that screen and technology. Augmented reality maybe by itself isnt an issue but not having the full screen in dash is. Because that allows you to use the right side screen for other things in full screen capacity like radio, car settings, carplay etc without having to lose navigation capability.

I have the augmented reality, tried it and turned it off, in my opinion it is confusing.

My SA confirmed today that my GLE, that is enroute to the dealer, had the AR dropped during production and is not currently an available option.

Got back from my dealer, they are saying that none of the 21s that were recently built or will be built until factory switches to MY22 in third week of September will have U19/Augmented Reality. The MY22 will have them beginning 4th week of September. They have secured some amount of chips but I guess the end of MY21 run was sacrificed.

Me too.
AR is cute and a fun thing to show to passengers, but it is NOT good for navigation IMO. You have to take your eyes off the road (your destination) and really study the video, which is two feet down and away from the windshield. It's a jumble of houses or storefronts streaming by - but you don't really see the intersection until you're almost past it. I tried for several thousand miles to adapt to that view and just quit looking. I was either turning too soon or missing the intersection entirely.

AR just isn't very useful since you have to study it, with your eyes off the road.

Later I found that there's a virtual button on the right of the AR screen, that disables the video and presents an aerial view of a basic street map, where you can see intersecting streets, even if there are several at odd angles. It's easy to see the correct route, and I prefer it to AR. It's visible and useful at a glance.

And if you have Heads Up, the windshield display is also more useful than the video in front of the passenger's knee.

I agree about the points about augmented reality by itself maybe not necessary. I do however believe the ability to make the dashscreen a true full screen is very necessary as that allows you to use the right screen for other things without compromising the navigation viewing area. I think in a car like this, that massive screen is one of the biggest utilities that GLE has over competitors. Now a screen that big isnt very useful if 50% of it has to be always broken into 3 smaller screens.

That is unfortunately correct. The dash cannot show the navigation in full screen unless the GLE has the option. The infotainment screen still does full screen like normal. One think I noticed with my GLE is I cannot split the screen like in my prior E300. In that car I would have the Navi map and the media on the screen at the same time. In the GLE I don’t see an option to do this.

Except on the dash in front of the driver. There you have dozens of combinations, including split or full screen.
Or you can have an entirely different display for the passenger. Five in all.
Whew.

I thought I read somewhere that if one turned off AR, it would negatively effect the full screen nav screen. True? Also, how can one turn it off and what happens to AR if I’m using WAZE with Apple CarPlay in the event you might be familiar with WAZE? TIA

Would be good to clarify this. Where did you read it?

I am fairly certain I read this on this site. When I ordered my 450, the order sheet said the AR was delayed. I then read on this site that they stopped putting in the AR in 2021’s due late summer, but had the chips available for early runs of 2022s.

When I placed my order, Augmented Video was supposedly available. During production, it was deleted. Interestingly, this is what my window sticker looks like. It appears to me that I would be able to add it at some point down the road.

That’s very interesting. When did you order your suv and refresh my memory. Did you get it yet and if so, when? I had no idea it could be added as a retrofit. I wonder if the retrofit will cost $350 or will the dealer pile on.

Placed my order on 4/16. Was planned for 1st decade of July but luckily, it went into production early. Delivered to dealer early last week and I picked it up 2 days ago.

I find the AR useful at times that I'm unfamiliar with an area or there aren't well marked streets. I like the arrow pointing and I've found it to be pretty reliable It's not the fastest so I do admit that at times I've past the street it said the turn was coming up to. More importantly, I really like the full screen nav in the dash. I wouldn't hold up a car for it, but I'm happy it was in mine. The HIUD would have been great but wasn't in mine.

I have both augmented reality and HUD - find them both useful. Appreciate any help in displaying navigation full screen on dashboard.
