Question Lithium replacement for 12V Battery

Hi,

Has anyone replaced the 12V lead acid battery with a lithium? I have a 2019/2020 GLE300d, and with the car not being driven much the lead acid battery is giving me some alerts in the car and Mercedes Me app.

If I have to replace the battery, I'd rather replace it with something with a longer lifespan. I'm in Australia.

Thanks,
Shane.

I am not aware of any vehicle that uses a lithium battery as the primary 12 volt battery. If you find something that will work, you should consider the charging process. Having said that, I started getting "Starting Battery Partially Charged" warnings in the Me app. My dealer ran a load test and found it was a bad battery. They replaced it under warranty.

How long had it been since you had driven the car before you got the "Starting Battery Partially Charged" notice?

My 2020 GLE 450 did the same thing at the perfect time. I had just dropped it off at the Dealer for warranty work and mid day I got the notice of starter battery critical. I assumed that they had disconnected the ground for some reason but sent an email to the Shop Foreman. They put it on a charger overnight (per MB) and tested in the AM. They replaced the 12 volt AGM since it failed the test after charging. That was two years ago so the procedure may be different now.

With COVID it could sit for several weeks without being used. On one trip to the dealer, they just charged it overnight and said it was from lack of use. It started again about two weeks later. Remote start would not work in that state. I was in for a recall and brought it up again. That is when they did the load test. Has been fine ever since.

It can't be done. While LifeP04 batteries are a superior alternative to AGM in many applications, as a starting battery is not one of them.

I found these as viable replacements. battery A0055411001 or Interstate costco item 1355853
I ended up getting a Duracell SLI49H8M - It was slightly bigger than the battery that I replaced, but it fit the battery tray fine. I had a vent hole, and replacement was fairly simple. I never had to resync anything afterwards.

My '15 BMW M4 has a Li-Ion primary 12v battery. Still good after almost 8 years, but will cost $1,200 or more to replace.

Ours has been getting frequent low battery warnings, even though it is driven some every couple days. They checked it and recharged it once. Will bring it up again when in for service in a month or so.

And Li-ion is suited for that application. What I was referring to is the 12 volt batteries widely available that look just like a conventional AGM but internally use 4 Lithium Iron Phosphate cells and a battery management system. The BMS can't handle the current of a car starter and they can not be charged below freezing.

Not questioning that this is usually the case, but this one claims to work for both starting and deep cycle. https://dakotalithium.com/product/da...ttery-1000cca/

It won't last too long. Down in the specs it says:

CHARGE VIA ALTERNATOR Drop in replacement for lead acid and AGM starter batteries for vehicles and outboard motors. NOTE: THE DL+ 60Ah IS LIMITED TO AN ALTERNATOR CHARGING PROFILE OF 80 AMPS OR LESS.

I'm not certain of the alternators in other GLE's but my 2020 GLE350 has a 200 amp alternator.

….or I would think you can replace it with a lead acid battery.

I’m curious, what’s your reason for not wanting to use a lead acid battery? Seems like over kill to start a car, but perhaps I’m missing something. I admit I’m not familar with how it’s being used in this application.

Why stay with Li-Ion battery?

Yeah, a little ****. The battery lives at the back of the trunk. The Li-Ion one is ~50% the weight of a standard one. When you’ve got a ton of weight saving measures like a carbon fiber roof, trunk & driveshaft and aluminum doors & hood, I like to preserve the design intent. And it’s durability speaks for itself - 7.6 years and still strong.

Got it—weight savings. Hopefully it will last for the life of the car — just don’t brick it!

Nice. Started a thread here of my W212's LiFePo4 conversion but everyone shot it down or didn't care Lol

Lithium still too scary for old-schoolers

Are you sure you're in the right forum? This is the v167 forum. This is the first post you've made in this thread, so no "old schoolers" have even had a chance to shoot you down yet.

This old-schooler has built and commissioned several hundred thousand watts of LiFePo4 batteries for solar storage using prismatic cells and JBD BMS. It's a battery technology that must be respected or it will bite you. I can supply pictures of burned RV's and boats belonging to people that took a casual attitude and dropped them in where they didn't belong. In most cases the BMS will save the common idiot from disaster but not always. To each their own...

I see. Well, don't even try to explain your logic.
But since you want a lambast "old schoolers," show us your post in this thread about your lithium conversion, so we can play along.

Maybe the new schooler in you has Special Powers!

I'm into solar myself. Been a fan of Will Prowse since before his youtube channel had 15k subs. I'm like the 10th or 11th person to sign up on his forum when it launched. Smart kid. Good stuff.

Sheesh, another tough crowd! I though "old schoolers" had thicker skin! Just a joke man! Like I said, no one cared, so the thread just died on the vine. I have lots of updates and conclusion I could add to it if interested. Here ya go:

Sheesh!
The crowd was depraved, on account'a they were deprived.
We won't be fooled again!

I think apologies are in order. Unjustified attack. (We also haven't seen your other posts, so if they died, it's not the V167 folks. It's you!)
