Winter tire and rim advice.

So in the past with my C43 and C63s I had a dedicated AMG OEM approved tire and rim set for our Calgary winters. Do you think I should invest in the $4200 Mercedes Rim and tire package. The rims in that package are fine but the tires they include are not the best winter tires at all. Am I risking my rims to be damaged if I take it to a reputable tire shop and have them swap the rubber only to something like a Nokian tire which is much better for our winters than the Mercedes OEM tires.

Is it a non issue ? Am I being too neurotic about this? I know removing tires and putting them back on is stressful on the sidewall especially on run flats but I think these coopers that come OEM on the GLE are non run flats. Looking for opinions and what you folks are doing in the northern climates.

I also have the rim and tire protection package and Mercedes told me they would cover the tires even if they are not OEM .. which makes no sense to me.

There are a couple threads about winter tire options in the forum. Generally the options/recommendations are different depending on your wheel size (fewer options available the larger the wheel).

In my case, I have the 21" wheels that came with the Pirelli All Season tires. I bought a set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3 SUV and have the dealer swap them (mount + balance) for winter, since I spend most of my time in the North East (Boston and Montreal). Other people opted for a separate set of dedicated wheels+winter tires.

I don't know what to do, either. I've had 3 sets of Nokian R2/3 SUV and they are really great.
We have Nokian GRW3 on the GLC, and I like the "All Weather" capabilities - run them year-round. But there aren't any "All Weather" tires in the 21" staggered size right now. That funny looking Michelin might work if they build it in our size.

I'm watching and waiting for this winter's tire introductions to see what is made available for that size, but it's an odd combo so I don't have a lot of hope.
The Winter Scorpions would fit, and I suppose they'd be OK, and that's a backup plan. Just the tires, probably, unless some used 20" wheels show up on eBay or somewhere. Or 21s.

Whatever shows, be ready to snap them up, since supply will probably dry up quickly, like last year.

I am also in Calgary and have started my search for winter wheels and tires. Downtown MB said $4500 for a set but I am not sure what tires you get for that. I would like to use my GLE this winter if possible...

I went with Tire Rack AM wheels and Michelin Pilot alpin pa5 suv on 20’s for about half that amount…US Dollars. Bought for my GLE 450 & they fit my GLE 53. Very good overall tire in snow or ice. Like posted earlier go to the thread on winter tires for some great info.

When you say AM wheels, what is the full name. I went to Tire Rack and don't see any called AM?? also, how do you buy a wheel on TR for specific car? When I tried to find wheels for my car it says no wheels available for your car.

Aftermarket=AM
The Winter thread covers all of the issues. I’m on vacation at Tahoe so don’t have time to research. Tire Rack has the 15mm conical bolts with the wheels when you buy there. These will work on the AMG 53/63 with larger calipers & 21/22” wheels. Also work on GLE 350; 450;580. They are 20’s, et45, and I bought black bolts from another source. MSW type 30 wheel; black; machined face.

I also have those Michelins in 20” and was very impressed with them in some tough conditions last Winter.

Calgary winter tires

I am in Calgary with a GLE 450 bought at Downtown Mercedes. I purchased 20" Nokian R3's @ Kal Tire and then took the tires to Downtown Mercedes service to have them mounted on the extra set of wheels I bought from them. A bit more expensive than buying the package from the dealer but I got what I wanted. Like you I was not impressed with the tire selection that came with the package. Works very well for me.
